Sierra Leone. Heavy fuel laden explosion makes 92 dead


A further 90 people died and dozens were injured in the explosion of a tanker loaded with fuel, after colliding with another heavy truck in the industrial area of ​​Wellington, near the capital Freetown, in Sierra Leone.

According to an official at the local hospital, 92 bodies arrived at the morgue this Saturday morning. Another 30 victims with severe burns were admitted to the emergency room.


The explosion appears to have occurred at an intersection near the Choithram supermarket in the eastern suburb of Wellingont around 10 pm (local time) on Friday.

According to witnesses, the collision between two heavy vehicles was at the origin of this explosion. A bus full of passengers was caught in the flames as were other vehicles.

The army and security forces are on the ground.

President Julius Maad Bio, who is in Scotland to participate in the Climate Summit (COP 26) has already lamented this “horrible loss of human life”, leaving condolences for the victims’ families.
