The movement behind Shia Muslim Imq Moqtada al-Sadr will become the largest group in the new Iraqi parliament.

It shows preliminary results from Sunday’s election. The movement is against foreign interference in Iraq.

There was very low turnout at the election.

According to the Electoral Commission’s preliminary statements, it looks like the lowest turnout since 2003, when an international military force led by the United States overthrew dictator Saddam Hussein.

In the most recent parliamentary elections in 2018, the turnout was 44.5 percent. AFP also writes that only a few have voted.

Especially the young people have stayed home. 60 percent of Iraq’s approximately 40 million people are under 25 years of age.

The election should not be held until seven months from now. But protests from predominantly young Iraqis two years ago prompted the government to speed up the election.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi came to power after the protests. His political future now seems uncertain.

There is a tradition of lengthy negotiations in Baghdad after elections.

It is expected that the Shia Muslim elite, where the most powerful parties have armed militias to back their policies, will maintain power in the country.

Moqtada al-Sadr’s main rivals are Iranian – backed Shia groups.
