At petrol stations, customers can choose to offset the carbon dioxide generated during the use of fuel for HUF 6 per liter, ie HUF 240 when refueling 40 liters. The company invests the proceeds in programs aimed at supporting the protection, restoration and creation of ecosystems involved in the absorption of greenhouse gases, said Andrea Bujdosó, Shell Hungary Zrt.’s sales manager for Hungary and Slovenia, at the company’s online press conference on Tuesday.
He indicated that Shell is making and planning further investments worldwide to protect wetlands, grasslands and agricultural land, as well as natural forests.
Andrea Bujdosó emphasized that they choose only solutions that represent the best quality neutralization. Projects from Hungary can also be included in the program if there are those that meet the highest quality standards, he said. Examples of projects include the conservation of the Cordillera Azul forest area in Peru and the Katingan peat bog in Indonesia.
Shell’s carbon neutralization service will be available in 15 countries, such as Germany, Austria, Canada, Denmark, and will be introduced in new countries after Hungary, said István Kapitány, Shell’s global vice president.
The program has already emitted a total of 4 million tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the carbon sequestration capacity of about 8 million trees, he highlighted.
The global vice president said, experience has shown that customer reactions are positive, with some countries where more than 10 percent of customers have chosen to participate in the program. In Hungary, too, the goal is to achieve a double-digit participation rate.
