How profitable is growing garlic? How demanding is its production and what is the biggest problem when growing this popular vegetable crop? The answers to these questions were given in the first person by Snežana Magda from Kovačica, who grows garlic together with her family.
“I graduated from the Faculty of Science and Mathematics in Novi Sad, majoring in B.Sc. Geographer-tourismologist. I grew up in a family that was involved agriculture. Since I was little, I helped my parents in the fields. From the age of ten, I loved to play and dig in the garden. When I passed the test, I was alone transported watermelons and sold them in a nearby village. After finishing college, I worked for a long time as restaurant manager. As everything went downhill during the pandemic, I had to think about what to do next. I am currently employed in the Tourism Organization of the Municipality of Kovačica, but only temporarily,” begins our today’s interlocutor.
Selling garlic as a nice income to supplement the household budget
As she says, when she looks back, she realizes that she was completely happy when she was in contact with nature and family. Return to nature, village, healthy ways plant production is something she is going towards and will be hers goal the following years. In the end, he points out, it is important that we do what makes us happy in order to make the people around us happy.
“My parents have been doing it for many years vegetable gardening. When they were younger, they could produce and sell many different crops. However, their years of life and the same uncertainty about placement of vegetable crops led them to reduce the area under vegetable crops and they continued to grow only garlic on a slightly larger plot, and mom grows other vegetables just for us. What overtakes we sell. That’s how I first got involved as far as the sale of garlic was concerned, and from last fall I started production with them. It’s a nice income for my family supplementing the household budgetand my husband and I can manage to get involved after our jobs, in the afternoon or on weekends,” said Snezana Magdu.
Garlic can stand and be sold slowly
He grows a variety Bosut and an old variety of garlic that her great-grandmother still had. What she mentioned is that these are varieties that can be reproduce and to always plant their seeds, year after year. Garlic is grown in Idvor, a small Banat village where our great scientist Mihajlo Pupin was born. The area on which they grow garlic is slightly less than a hectare, to be exact 0,8ha.
When asked why she chose garlic, she answers that it is primarily because they don’t have to rush to sell it within a day or two. He can stand and sell slowly, Take your time. Also, because of its application wide. It can be used fresh, as an addition to winter food and dishes. It can be used as dry spice. It can be medicine for both people and plants. They already have customers who have convinced themselves of the quality.
“We sell garlic at retail, through the platform Small producers in Serbia. We take it to Belgrade by order. I also send by express mail to all parts of Serbia. Many customers have also planted our garlic seeds. We also sell part of it accumulations, who come to the village of Idvor to buy larger quantities. However, there is very little left for them”, points out the interlocutor of our portal.
They don’t have an irrigation system, they rely on the weather
We also talked with her about what is key in growing garlic properly. As he says, if we want to have primarily healthy garlic, nicely formed heads, it must be provided quality planting material, cultivate the land well. Time and attention must be given. It is the most important thing follow the development from planting to harvesting.
“My mother and I have been trying for a long time to have healthy vegetables, as much as it can be in today’s time. We manually separate the heads into cones at the end of September. During this time, the father prepares the plot for planting. Fertilize it with manure and mineral fertilizer. We plant garlic in mid-October. In the spring, top-feeding starts again. We hoe it by hand two or three times. It depends on the amount of precipitation. We don’t have an irrigation system, so we rely on the weather. Around the middle of June, it is taken out and then dried on wheels, in sheds until it is dry enough,” explains this Banać woman.
The biggest problem is imported garlic
We asked her what is the biggest problem in the production of garlic. She answers that it is the biggest problem imported garlic, which cannot match the quality of domestic garlic, and lowers the price of our domestic garlic. Also various pests and diseases, which can threaten the entire effort.
Fortunately, he points out, they didn’t have those problems, but he has to think ahead and preventively. This year she experimented with effective microorganisms on other vegetables, and plans to apply this technology to garlic as well. It is used in organic production, and it has a preventive effect and thus you can have a healthy product.
“Compared to other cultures, garlic is it pays off. It’s not a huge profit, especially for us small producers, but it can be decent if the price of garlic is wholesale about 200 dinars, when cleaned. The problem is the instability of the market, and every year when we plant it, we are not sure whether it will be able to be sold at a solid price so that we can make a little money, not just cover the costs of production”, said our interlocutor at the end.
