Seven million Dutch people use regional news apps

More than half of the Dutch people use a regional news app in addition to a national news app. This category of apps is doing very well especially outside the Randstad.

“Regional news apps are doing very well, both in terms of usage and appreciation. Their fame is particularly high in Friesland, Limburg and Zeeland.” Seven million of the eleven million Dutch people who use news apps use apps from regional news providers.

That picture emerges in the new National News App Monitor (PDF), commissioned by developer Pinch. The survey was conducted over seven thousand respondents. They were asked about use of and experience with 75 news apps, including 19 national news apps, 31 regional and 25 digital newspaper replicas.

It turns out that it doesn’t matter if someone lives in a very urban area or far out of it. In both cases, more than eighty percent have national news apps and about half have regional news apps.

However, the regional apps are always positioned under NOS.nl and NU.nl. Except in Groningen.

In terms of use, all media lose out to news apps.

More than seventy percent of the respondents indicate that they only use free apps.

Independent media researcher Piet Bakker says in a press release as an explanation: “Normally, websites and apps are mixed up when they are researched, now apps are measured separately for the first time. This research is therefore a very welcome addition. As soon as this research is done more often, we will identify trends and changes.”

Pinch director Tim Klein Haneveld: “Two thirds think the apps are good and user-friendly. But not the rest. There is a lot of room for improvement: twenty percent even give a 5 or lower.”
