If you’re a fan of shooting hordes of enemies with a wide range of weapons, while your character utters monotonous words worth moaning, chances are you’ve played Serious Sam at some point in your life. If not, you are doing things wrong.
For 20 years, “Serious” Stone has been fighting for the Earth, trying to protect it from the forces of Mental. And while the scenery may have changed from game to game, one thing has remained constant: the focus on the action of the ball against the wall. Serious Sam 4 doesn’t deviate from that either, although it adds a number of new elements to keep the experience fresh and takes players to more locations than ever before. The original Serious Sam will always have a place in our hearts, but overall, Serious Sam 4 is only better.
The action continues as Mental’s hordes launch a full attack around the world. And of course, it’s up to Sam “Serious” Stone to do something about it. This time, however, he has a team to help him. They are useful at times, but they are mostly there to make you laugh. They joke about the inability of beginners to extract ghosts of monotonous words in good times and how the series is now AAA, so it needs a deeper story. Still, you are undoubtedly still the star of the series, along with an arsenal of weapons ranging from a double-barreled shotgun to a cannonball launcher, and everything is prepared to turn enemies into explosions of blood and intestines.
While the characters laugh that Serious Sam’s last outing is an AAA game, you may be disappointed if you expect something as sleek as, say, DOOM Eternal. There are some new features such as optional side goals and a skill scoring system that allows you to develop Sam over time, which eventually allows him to ride certain monsters or use even the biggest weapons. However, after all, this is still a very simple game in which all you have to worry about is killing everything that accuses you of bad intentions.
When it comes to PS5 port, there are some unfortunate technical problems that slightly worsen the experience. You will notice that the loading time is quite long, for example. If you’re used to next-generation games, you’re no doubt used to loading screens that appear and then disappear in the blink of an eye, and so they peek out like a sore thumb. The frame rate is not perfect either. Two graphics options are available – quality and performance. In quality mode, the visuals really shine, but the frame rate varies a lot, especially because it’s not limited to 30 frames per second. Performance mode is much better, but there are still times when the frame rate will drop from 60 frames per second.
The truth is, however, that it’s no surprise that Serious Sam 4 sometimes struggles, as the action is truly mental. The environment is great, and although the visuals are not the best, they are still quite beautiful. There is an impressive range of enemies that you can also face, and you rarely fight against just a few. Sometimes you will find yourself against 100 or more enemies, truly testing your ability to shoot in a circle and effectively target. There is nothing else like it. Or at least not on this scale.
Then put it on Serious Sam 4 in performance mode, and while your experience won’t be perfect on the PS5, you’ll still have a damn good time. Perhaps the humor and simple premise of the game will cause greater divisions; some will like it for its silly short sentences and the action of the ball against the wall, others may find it too repetitive and macho. However, if you like the idea of butchering an entire army of monsters ranging from vampires to reptilian demons that throw green balls of energy at you, then be sure to give it a try. And what other game allows you to relax in harvest harvester to increase the number of dead bodies?
