Sergiu Hanca scored the only goal of the match Krakow – Gornik, won by his team, and the dedicated Romanian midfielder the success of his former colleague from Dinamo, Patrick Ekeng. He passed away on May 6, 2016, and every year Hanca scores around this date and dedicates his successes to Patrick.
Romanian midfielder Sergiu Hanca (29 years old) is about to finish the third season in the jersey of the Poles from Krakow, a team whose captain he is. Sergiu agreed to talk to ProSport about the goal he scored yesterday in Krakow – Gornik 1-0. He dedicated the success of the commemoration of Patrick Ekeng. Hanca was a colleague of Ekeng at Dinamo and was one of the closest players to the place where the Cameroonian midfielder fell breathless during the Dinamo – Viitorul 3-3 match, in 2016.
Hanca also talks about how he felt when Mirel Rădoi didn’t stop him at the last action of the national team, although he was on the extended list, but also about the fact that he wants to finish his career at Dinamo, his soul team.
2025 is the year in which Hanca’s contract with Krakow ends
PROSPORT: Sergiu, you scored the winning goal in the match with Gornik and you dedicated the success to Patrick Ekeng. How do you feel when you think of him?
SERGIU HANCA: This year marks five years since Patrick died. Every year when I played for him I scored. Only last season did not happen, due to the pandemic, because the championship was stopped. I do this out of respect for him, he was my colleague and he was an incredible man in every way. I think he was one of the happiest colleagues I’ve ever had. He was always positive, with a smile on his face. I’ve never seen him sad or upset. Even if you do not play! I admired him a lot for that! He showed that he was a strong person.
“This year has been difficult, next season we are fighting for trophies!”
PSP: What feelings are you having?
SH: I get a pretty weird feeling when I think of him because he died right next to me. I was close to him on the field when it happened. Every year, as the commemoration of his death approaches, I play only in his memory. For me, the goals marked are proof that he sees and appreciates from there in Heaven that I am thinking of him. I think it helps me from Above to score to dedicate the goals to his memory.
PSP: How was the season that was almost over for you and Krakow?
SH: It was quite difficult because I left with five points at the beginning of the season, and then there were a lot of situations in which I don’t even know how our coach managed to handle the situation. We had many players infected with COVID, then others got injured. Two were returning from isolation, two others were found positive. They came back, three players got injured and so on. It was hard! We changed our goal along the way because we had nothing to do. These things made us mentally stronger and stronger as a team, and at next year I’m sure we’ll fight to win trophies.
“Mirel Rădoi can form a national team for the final tournaments!”
PSP: For you personally, how was this season?
SH: As! It was quite difficult mentally because I had a pretty bad injury. So far I haven’t been used to injuries. I’ve never had any muscle problems. It happened now and the injury kept me away from the lawn for almost three months. It affected me because I later realized how things were going. At first I was consumed and agitated because I couldn’t play. I had nothing to do and I finally understood that I have to have the patience to heal and then play the game very well again and be able to help my team.
PSP: You were summoned again in the extended group of the national team, but Mirel Rădoi did not stop you at the last action. Did this frustrate you?
SH: I think that when the coach of the Romanian national team makes the selection, we must all be “pro” in his choices. Let’s accept them and gather all our energies for the national team to win. Whether we are stopped in the lot or not. It didn’t demoralize me, it even made me ambitious. I was there, I worked with him and I know exactly what he expects from everyone. From my point of view, he is a very prepared coach on all levels. I am referring here both technically and tactically and to the mental training of the players. I think that Mister Rădoi can form a national team that will qualify for the final tournaments.
“Dinamo took six important points! They still have work to do! ”
PSP: Ok, but you weren’t called even though you had become a regular in the group. Didn’t it really affect you?
SH: All these things that don’t happen the way I want them to, are just things that make me work harder. I will wait for the opportunity when it is given to me. Of course, every time I find my name on the extended list of national teams, I am proud because it means that people look at me. And when I stay in the lot for an action, it’s a great pride for me. At the same time, it is a confirmation that I am doing well.
Hanca scored 15 goals in 69 matches for Krakow in the all-time championship
PSP: How do you feel about the situation at your former club, Dinamo?
SH: It is very important that after a dark period they tied two victories, with Voluntari and Viitorul. There are six important points, especially since they are still down in the standings. I hope with all my heart to keep it on the same line. Certainly their morale is good now. There is a cliché in football that victories bring victories, but it is full of truth. They still have work to do because it is very difficult in both the playoffs and the playoffs. Especially now, at the end of the season, when many teams are out of shape and the players are physically and mentally tired. I think now character and ambition will make the difference to get through this difficult time.
“I want to retire from Dinamo and become the team’s coach!”
PSP: After your contract with Krakow expires, are you considering returning to Dinamo?
SH: To be honest, I don’t know what will happen after my contract with these people ends. What is certain is that this is one of my wishes. I want to go back to Dinamo, the club I felt best at in Romania. It’s the team I’ve been with since I was a child and I dreamed of playing. I want to put on my Dinamo shirt again and retire from Stephen the Great. Then, why not, to coach this team!
PSP: The DDB project reached over 15,000 members. What do you think?
SH: What Dinamo’s supporters did is unique in Romania. It hasn’t happened before and I don’t think it will ever happen again. All they need is a very strong sponsor to come with them. I think they’re missing that. Certainly, if the fans will be with these sponsors who would support the team, great things would be done. But I would like to add something about Dinamo’s supporters.
Hanca scored 18 goals in 95 matches for Dinamo in League 1
SH: I really want a stadium to be built for Dinamo fans because Dinamo fans really deserve a new arena, in line with what they do for the team. A strong sponsor to come with the fans and a new stadium would make Dinamo become an extremely strong team in Romania.
