The Seoul Metropolitan Government is providing various support such as operating a dedicated shopping center in cooperation with a large online mall and conducting discount events to develop online sales channels for small business owners.

First of all, the Seoul Metropolitan Government issued discount coupons worth about 490 million won at ‘Super Seoul Week’ held at 5 online shopping malls (Lotteon, Gmarket, Auction, Coupang, and Timon) for 3 weeks from June 21st to July 11th. It generated a total of 12.8 billion won in sales (26.3 times more effective than coupons).

At this event, about 5,000 products of small businesses were sold, and consumers were able to purchase products at a discount of up to 20%. According to participating shopping malls, thanks to the hosting of ‘Super Seoul Week’, the sales of small business owners increased by about 70% compared to the same period last year.

Looking at the sales trend by sector compared to the same period last year, the ‘beauty’ sector saw a 45% increase in sales during the Super Week, and the home interior (35%) and companion products (30%) sectors also showed significant growth.

In addition, sales in the food sector, where small business is exclusively distributed, and small home appliances in summer increased by 60% and 50%, respectively. It is interpreted that synergy in sales growth has been achieved due to the change in preference for home convenience meals due to social distancing and the increase in demand for small home appliances related to the hot summer.

Thanks to the results of this event, the city of Seoul plans to continue the ‘Super Seoul Week’ event in December. In particular, it plans to recruit at least 1,000 small business owners who want to enter the online market and support them in store and sales.

Also noteworthy is the Seoul Solsol Market, a small business hall operated by Lotte On, Gmarket, Auction, Coupang, and Tmon. The market, which has been operating as a permanent business since May, recorded a total of 3.7 billion won in sales for two months from May to June.

Currently, there are about 2,000 types of products for small business owners, and they are gaining popularity because their sales commissions are lower than those of general companies and they have the advantage of being able to receive discount coupons and publicity support. Solsol Market will operate until December of this year, and WeMakeup, a shopping mall, will also participate in the second half of this year.

The increase in online sales such as Solsol Market and Super Seoul Week is also attributed to the city’s customized education and consulting to enhance the practical skills of small business owners.

Currently, the city of Seoul supports a variety of programs such as basic education for small business owners to advance online, online mall MD counseling, visiting consulting, shopping mall detail page production, and product packaging improvement.
