One of the four Olympic qualifying tournaments in Belgrade will take place from June 29 to July 4.
The Senegal national team spent part of the preparation period in Germany, where they also planned to hold a test match. However, it turned out that three basketball players and one member of the service staff had been diagnosed with Covid-19, as a result of which the German authorities prevented the team from flying to Belgrade.
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) later confirmed that due to the spread of Covid-19, the Senegal national team will not participate in the qualifying tournament.
The Senegal national team in Group B would have met Italy and Puerto Rico, which were automatically in the semi-finals due to the withdrawal of their competitors.
Serbia, the Philippines and the Dominican Republic will meet in Group A in Belgrade.
Qualifying tournaments will also take place in Kaunas, Lithuania, Split, Croatia, and Victoria, Canada.
The Tokyo Olympics will feature four national teams that have won the above qualifiers. The group tournament games will run until July 2, but the semi-finals and finals will be held in the next two days.
Argentina, Australia, France, Iran, Nigeria, Spain, the United States and host Japan have already qualified for the Tokyo Olympics.
