self-government projects for people with special needs were highly appreciated

Deputy of the Daugavpils City Duma, Chairman of the Committee on Social Issues Natalia Kozhanova on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, she reported on the high appraisal by the inhabitants of Riga of two self-government projects aimed at creating an accessible environment for people with special needs.

«Sometimes, in order to evaluate your own successes and rejoice at albeit small, but important achievements, you need an outside perspective. You need someone to notice your efforts.

Today Daugavpils was visited by representatives of Dienas Mediji, who, on the initiative of the Ministry of Welfare and with the support of the European Social Fund, on November 24 held the conference “Problems of Inclusive Design in the Urban Environment».

Within the framework of this conference, 2 projects of the Daugavpils City Council were noted as successful examples of creating an accessible environment. The award was given to projects implemented in the Day Care Center for People with Mental Disabilities (Arkhitektu Street 21) and the Multifunctional Social Services Center Priedīte (Turaides Street 36).

Many thanks to the Ministry of Welfare and European funds for their help and support in the implementation of these projects and many thanks to the local government workers, builders – all those whose efforts in the Day Care Center have created a wonderful recreation area with a unique swing for wheelchair users, and in Priedīte it will now be possible to provide much needed social services for people with disabilities.

It is symbolic that the Riga guests presented the award to our city on the International Day of Disabled Persons. This day is important for many residents of Daugavpil, so we will continue to work on creating a favorable urban environment in which every citizen will feel comfortable. And today I would like to wish everyone health, understanding and kindness!“- said N. Kozhanova.
