Scammers love WhatsApp

Kaspersky Lab told what messengers Russian scammers use to catch victims most often. The leader was our beloved WhatsApp.

83% of phishing links are sent to WhatsApp, followed by Viber, while Telegram accounted for 7%. The study was conducted from December 2020 to May 2021. Almost every second attempt to follow a malicious link from a messenger was blocked in Russia.

“Phishing is a very common type of online fraud, most often aimed at stealing personal data. You can encounter it almost everywhere: in e-mail, SMS, social networks, advertising issues. Messengers are no exception. Attackers monitor what is happening in the world and understand that people are increasingly using instant messengers for personal and work communication. We recommend using anti-phishing technologies and be skeptical about dubious suggestions in messages, “said Olga Svistunova, content analyst at Kaspersky Lab.

Kaspersky Lab recommendations:
  • Stay vigilant on the web and check for typos or other suspicious inconsistencies in the links before clicking on them: if the link is in doubt, you should type the site address in a search engine and compare each character.
  • Do not distribute suspicious links, because phishers often ask users to share a malicious link with their contact list, realizing that people trust more what their acquaintances send them;
  • Be careful when receiving suspicious messages (usually asking for a loan), even from those you know personally, because there is always the possibility that the accounts of your friends and acquaintances have been hacked.
  • Be wary of easy money offers, winnings, promises to give something for free.
