Scam calls are increasingly coming from a fake number – this is how Elisa and Traficom eradicate scams

Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom is preparing ways to prevent widespread caller ID fraud in scam calls. Ways are being sought together with telecom operators operating in Finland. The aim is to make it more difficult and impossible for international criminals to operate.

Counterfeiting of a caller’s number in scam calls from abroad has been a significant problem in Finland since last year, and the number of scam calls has continued to grow strongly this year.

According to Traficom, the falsification of a caller’s number applies without exception to calls made to Finland from abroad. There is practically no problem with calls within Finland.

At present, operators do not have the possibility to identify the caller and check whether he has the right to use the reported Finnish telephone number.

To alleviate the problem, Traficom has begun to prepare, together with telecom operators, ways to prevent the forgery of a caller’s number into a Finnish telephone number. These means will be laid down in a binding regulation for telecommunications operators. In this case, the telecommunications operator can ensure that the number belongs to the subscription customer who has access to that number.

The recipient of the call can, in turn, trust that the call coming from the Finnish number has been made from a Finnish telephone subscription. In addition, the holder of a Finnish telephone subscription and number can trust that his or her telephone number will not be used for crimes.

You can still call Finland from abroad with a Finnish telephone subscription and number. Companies operating in Finland will continue to be able to purchase and offer switching services or call center services for the company’s use from abroad. In this case, the interconnection must be arranged in cooperation with the telecommunications operators in such a way that calls from the business switch can be identified and access to the numbers can be ensured.

Traficom points out that companies should ensure that the telephone services they purchase abroad are arranged in this way, otherwise calls may be blocked altogether in the future.
