Saturday coffee №156 – – All about mobile equipment and technologies

The week was not very rich in interesting news, so today there will be a light release. Let’s start with the fact that two new types of messages have appeared in the VKontakte mobile application: disappearing and silent.

Apple AirTag smart tags went on sale in Russia. The price of the device has not changed, one tag costs 2,990 rubles, and a set of four AirTags will cost 9,990 rubles.

I already wrote about AirTag here:

And the company Kia showed how the interior of its new flagship sedan K9 will look like, the previous version of which was sold in Russia under the name K900.

Huawei has introduced HarmonyOS 2.0

The Chinese manufacturer of smartphones and telecommunications equipment Huawei has officially unveiled the OS for smartphones of its own design – HarmonyOS 2.0. Huawei said that 300 million devices will run HarmonyOS by the end of 2021. Let me remind you that the company introduced the first version of HarmonyOS in August 2019, and even then it was positioned as a replacement for Android from Google. At the first stage, smart TVs and some gadget accessories worked on the basis of Huawei OS, now HarmonyOS 2.0 is entering the smartphone market.

The first point outlined in the presentation was that HarmonyOS 2.0 is a single operating system for various gadgets, from smartphones and tablets to coffee makers and stoves, as well as other IoT devices that have 128 KB of memory on board and which do not even have own display. Along the way, the Chinese kicked Apple, pointing out that the Cupertino-based company has several operating systems for different categories of gadgets, while HarmonyOS 2.0 is the same for all devices.

The second thing the company has focused on is the ease of connection and interaction between devices running on HarmonyOS 2.0. For example, you are watching a movie on your smartphone, but suddenly decided to continue watching it on TV. Just open the panel, which displays all the devices in the system, and drag the TV icon to the center, thereby connecting the smartphone to the TV and transferring the picture to the latter. If you want the sound to come from the headphones at this moment, it’s not a problem, open the same panel and drag the headphone icon, voila, and the sound goes through them. It is just as easy for the system to interact, for example, with kitchen appliances, you bring your smartphone to the same stove with HarmonyOS 2.0, and a control panel appears on the smartphone screen, and special widgets with recipes are loaded from the network. In general, such magic, only not Apple, but Huawei. Moreover, the Chinese want to cover as many categories of devices as possible, not being limited, like an American company, to only a few types of gadgets. The solution looks very interesting and attractive, but the whole catch is that Huawei needs to force users to surround themselves with the devices of the company’s ecosystem, and this will not be easy to do so far. In addition, an interesting question is with third-party device manufacturers on HarmonyOS 2.0, whether they will be able to implement everything competently so that the magic of Huawei is not destroyed.

The third point concerns the company’s smartphones and tablets. Visually, HarmonyOS 2.0 looks like a regular EMUI on them, with the exception of one important difference, which is the presence of the Control Panel in the system, or simply the control panel. This solution is somewhat reminiscent of the quick access curtain in the Android OS, only much more advanced. So, from the control panel, you can get quick access, for example, to the Wi-Fi connection settings without having to go deep into the settings of the device. There is also a music player widget, and you yourself can bind your preferred service to it. And also from the control panel, you can immediately control smart home devices that interact with HarmonyOS 2.0. In fact, the company has taken the best from Android, iOS and third-party solutions, packaged beautifully and now offers it to users.

We have already released material on HarmonyOS 2.0:

Updates to HarmonyOS 2.0 are promised to be released on almost all more or less fresh devices of the company. Among the new solutions with the already pre-installed OS, the MatePad Pro 2 tablet was presented with a large 12.6-inch OLED display, which supports the new M-Pencil stylus (purchased separately). For the device, it will be possible to purchase a keyboard cover, thereby turning the tablet into a kind of laptop.

The new smart watches Huawei Watch 3 and Watch 3 Pro were also presented. The devices will also receive HarmonyOS 2.0 out of the box, will support eSIM (the company has already agreed with operators in Russia) and, accordingly, will be able to work offline, without being tied to a smartphone. For Huawei watches, Yandex and VKontakte have already released their applications. For the first, this is the streaming service “Yandex.Music”, and for the second – a social network itself, and also with the support of a music service.

We have already released our first impressions of the new Huawei tablet and watch:

In addition, the company has officially unveiled a series of 55- and 65-inch Huawei Vision S smart screens that can display images with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The presented new items, running under the proprietary operating system HarmonyOS 2.0, are equipped with chipsets, which include a 4-core processor and a 4-core graphics module, 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory, which provide a speedy interface, high-quality playback of video calls and other applications. … The HUAWEI Vision S is equipped with a 13-megapixel magnetic camera that allows you to make video calls using the capabilities of the large screen. An audio system with four branded speakers with a power of 10 W each is installed in the smart screens of Huawei Vision S series: two broadband and two high-frequency ones. In Russia, the Salyut family of virtual assistants is integrated into Huawei Vision S smart screens, and there is also access to the Sberbank branded applications catalog. You can pre-order the Huawei Vision S from June 22, and on July 2, the device will go on sale in official Huawei stores and partner stores. The 55-inch model will cost 59,990 rubles, and the 65-inch model will cost 89,990 rubles.

It is worth noting here that Huawei Vision S is precisely smart displays, not TVs, since they lack an analog and digital tuner. Inside, there will be preinstalled services typical for smart TV, the same online cinemas and others. It is also worth noting that Huawei has reached an agreement with Sberbank and the voice assistants of the Russian company will be available in the Vision S smart panels, as well as the services of their ecosystem, for example, the Okko online cinema.

And I also recommend you our material about the music streaming service Huawei Music, which was recently released in Russia:

While Huawei releases HarmonyOS 2.0, the spin-off Honor plans to re-enter the Android smartphone market with Google services. According to the well-known leak author Digital Chat Station, Honor will release the Honor X20 series smartphones following the release of the Honor X50, which is slated for June 16. In the meantime, the informant shared a real image of the X20. As you can see, the device has received a back panel with a gradient color. In the upper left corner is the system with three cameras and LED flash. It is reported that the resolution of the main sensor will be 64 MP. The Honor X20 is expected to receive a 6.67-inch IPS screen with Full HD + resolution and high refresh rate, MediaTek’s Dimensity 1200 chipset and a 4,200mAh battery that will support 66W fast charging.

Very fast charging from Xiaomi

Xiaomi claims the world record for wired charging speed – the Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro smartphone with a 4000 mAh battery can fully charge from the Xiaomi HyperCharge 200 W wired charging in just 8 minutes. The company also showed 120W wireless charging, which provides a full charge of such a smartphone in 15 minutes. Xiaomi just two years ago introduced a 100W charger that provided a full charge of a 4000 mAh battery in 17 minutes, and last year the company released a 120W charger that provided a full charge for a Mi10 Ultra smartphone with a 4,500 mAh battery in 23 minutes. But these characteristics in terms of charging time, the presented devices can only achieve when using a proprietary cable that can safely transfer such energy in a short time. Other Chinese companies are also participating in the charger competition. For example, OPPO last year introduced a 125W charger capable of charging a 4,000mAh battery in 20 minutes.

There are two questions here, the first is how quickly smartphone batteries will die when using such chargers. And the second – how many of you are ready to buy such fast chargers. I usually charge devices at night, and super speed is not important to me here. Yes, there are times when you need to charge something during the day, but usually for this I use external batteries, and not mains chargers.

As for Xiaomi, this week we released a review of the Mi Watch Lite:

Oleg will talk

Telephone secretary Oleg from the Tinkoff ecosystem has become available for use by all mobile operators. The public service will be able to receive, record and translate the caller’s voice into text. The system is optimized to work with spammers and phone scammers. To connect the basic version of the service, you can use bots in social networks or activate the service in the Tinkoff mobile application. After activating the service, calls from unidentified numbers to which the subscriber does not answer himself, the voice assistant will automatically start answering, the AI will determine by keywords that a spammer or fraudster is trying to enter the dialogue, and based on these data, it will build communication. Then the user will be sent a message with an audio recording of the conversation and a text transcript. If the user installs an incoming call identifier from Tinkoff, he will be able to decide for himself whether to pick up the phone. In a higher version of protection available to Tinkoff Mobile users, the system will automatically detect spam calls and send them to voicemail. The service will be free for subscribers of all operators, thus Tinkoff wants to draw attention to its services and fintech products.

Good promotion of your own product outside your ecosystem. It is not very clear why such a secretary is needed, if we do not have a culture of voice mail in our country, and listening / reading what spammers / scammers say there is absolutely not interesting. But as a marketing ploy very well, everyone wrote about it this week, respectively, and I also wrote. So it worked.

Lexus will release a new NX

The Japanese automaker Lexus announced that the world premiere of the new generation of the Lexus NX crossover will take place on June 12, 2021 at 6:00 Moscow time, and you can watch it on the company’s official website. So far Lexus has only posted a snippet of the rear of the car, where we can see that the NX will receive new optics with an active LED strip that integrates the headlights.

We have already talked about the current generation Lexus NX. This is a rather specific urban crossover, which, despite some controversial decisions, is in demand among our compatriots:

And this week the Russian presentation of the fourth generation of the Hyundai Tucson crossover took place, you can read about it in a separate article:

… And dessert
