Tallinn – Figure skater Michal Březina said goodbye to the European Championships with one of his best free rides in his life. He had the execution of all elements from the judges in positive values, he managed all triple jumps according to the plan. He planned to take one turn at the four-room salchow, instead introducing a combination of a triple salchow with a triple toeloop.
While the short program messed up a lot, he got a taste for free riding. “I showed everything I trained except for the square salchow. He pointed in plus points and everything that was supposed to be there. There was only one turn missing at the salchow,” he smiled.
He gave up the fourth jump voluntarily this time. He had struggled with him since his arrival in Tallinn, although he was still fine before leaving for training in the USA. “I think it definitely helped that there wasn’t a possible mistake. It also saved me the strength for the rest of the program. It added energy not only to me but also to the audience. We felt good about that ride and I can be happy with the way I drove last free at the European Championships, “he said.
Coach Rafael Arutjunjan was not thrilled with his decision. “I got scolded. The coach didn’t understand what happened and why. I think if he was here he would see that the Salchow wasn’t completely fine,” Březina said. He regretted a little that he hadn’t made a similar decision before the short program. “You can’t do anything about it now. I’m glad I thought before that free ride,” he added.
A few weeks before the fourth Olympic start, today’s performance was an encouragement for him. “I just have to tune in to Salchow in some way. I don’t know what happened,” said Březina, who will train with his sister Eliška and father Rudolf at the stadium in Kurim. It will also focus on a short program. “Now I focused a bit more on free riding in training than on shorts, it was also a bit of my fault,” he said.
Only twice out of fourteen participations in the European Championship fell out of the elite ten, this is an unprecedented balance. He likes to remember his only big senior medal, the bronze from 2013. “The main one that will stick in my head will always be the Zagreb. The medal is with my parents in Brno and with everyone else I have ever won,” said the junior world vice-champion of 2009.
In tenth place at the European Championships, he secured two participating places for the Czechia at the next European Championships, which will take place in Helsinki. “I hope that whoever goes to the next Europe will keep the two places in some way,” he told his followers. According to him, they have potential. “It depends on how much they want it and how much work they want to put into it, so that they can compete with those competitors who are in the top ten at the European Championships. It’s not just about jumping. It’s also about skating, about speech,” he added.
