Garmin has launched inReach Messenger, a new device where the focus is on communication and more specifically via satellite communication. Using the inReach Messenger, it is possible to send global two-way messages, position sharing and SOS either as a standalone device or via the Garmin Messenger mobile app, where the mobile needs to be connected to the device. When sending and receiving messages through the Garmin Messenger app, it will seamlessly send and receive messages over either Wi-Fi, cellular or satellite connectivity via the Iridium satellite network depending on conditions.
In the event of an accident, inReach Messenger and the inReach Messenger app can send SOS messages to Garmin’s 24/7 manned International Emergency Contact Center (IERCC).
However, inReach Messenger does not require a mobile phone, but can work completely independently, allowing the user to check in to places, send location updates, start or stop tracking and send SOS directly from your device. It also has a dedicated SOS button to be able to quickly raise the alarm in the event of an accident.
The inReach Messenger measures 7.8 x 6.3 centimeters and weighs 114 grams, it has an IPX7 rating and with the basic settings the battery life is 28 days. It can be paired with more than 80 compatible Garmin devices including smartwatches and vehicle navigation equipment.
Garmin inReach Messenger is available now with a recommended price of SEK 3,249, but an active subscription is also required where the cheapest is just over SEK 135/month with extra fees for messages and any extra services.
