SARA Political Deviance Must Be Against

Suara.com – Political parties and politicians are invited not to raise issues regarding ethnicity, religion, race, and intergroups ahead of the 2024 elections.

“Therefore, the government and KPU must focus on preventing SARA politics or identity politics, especially in the 2024 elections,” said MPR chairman Bambang Soesatyo in a written statement in Jakarta.

He considered that one of the steps that the government and the KPU could take was to encourage political parties to carry quality cadres and integrate them into elections. The move is intended so that the battle in the election is not colored by a SARA-smelling campaign, but is a battle for programs that develop the region.

“KPU needs to take the initiative to invite the whole community to work together against SARA political deviations or hoax campaigns in elections, by prioritizing transparency, accountability and actions that uphold democratic values, legal certainty and respect for human rights,” he said.

He also encouraged the government to provide education for citizens as wise users of digital technology so that it becomes one of the sustainable and consolidated agendas between stakeholders in elections.

The hope is that a digitally literate society will be created and far from the impact of the politicization of SARA which divides the nation and destroys diversity.

“I ask for the commitment of the government and related parties not to use buzzers in building democracy and to continue to strive to maintain a conducive political situation in the country, especially ahead of the 2024 elections,” he said.

This is so that the 2024 election is far from polarization based on the irrationality of identity politics in the form of malicious campaigns, fake news or hoaxes, to the politicization of SARA as a major challenge to Indonesia’s electoral democracy.

President Joko Widodo has reminded presidential and vice presidential candidates not to politicize SARA ahead of the 2024 election.

“Debate please; debate ideas, debate ideas to make this country better, please; but don’t get heated, let alone bring SARA politics. No, don’t. Politicize religion, no, don’t,” said Jokowi at the XVII National Conference of the Young Entrepreneurs Association Indonesia in Surakarta, Central Java, Monday (21/11).

In his speech, Jokowi repeatedly called for not taking advantage of religious issues in political contests. The Indonesian nation, said Jokowi, had experienced the negative effects of the politicization of religion, as well as the politicization of ethnicity, race or class. Therefore, political methods by exploiting SARA issues must be avoided.

“Do politics of ideas, politics of ideas; but don’t get into SARA politics, don’t politicize religion, don’t do identity politics,” said Jokowi.

Jokowi reminded that the politicization of SARA would be very dangerous for a country that has conditions of diversity like Indonesia. He asked the presidential and vice presidential candidates to keep the national political situation cool.
