Over the last few years the much mistreated genre of musou is experiencing a moment of great limelight, thanks largely to works like Persona 5 Strikers and the two Hyrule Warriors. A new renaissance, which on the broad shoulders of the two historical series has made many new fans discover the genre, who for one reason or another had not yet approached it. To try to ride the long wave of this particularly positive moment is Samurai Warriors 5, the last episode of one of the sacred monsters of the genre, which for the occasion has definitely redone his clothes. The latest effort of Omega Force is not in fact a simple sequel, but a real reboot, which upsets both the aesthetic and the narrative level the series born as a branch of Dynasty Warrior. In short, an unmissable appointment for any fan of the genre, with Samurai Warriors 5 landing today on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, as well as obviously also on PS5 and Xbox Series thanks to backwards compatibility.
We reviewed the game with the following PC:
Samurai Warriors 5: a new beginning
Samurai Warriors 5 tells, as per the tradition of the saga, the events that took place in Japan durante l’epoca Sengoku, but this time focusing not on Sanada Yukimura, but on Oda Nobunaga e Mitsuhide Akechi. A leap back several years then compared to what we were used to, with the game that manages to maximize this change of perspective. While not disruptive, the narrative structure is in fact much less fragmented than in the past and manages to tell a compelling and enjoyable story to follow. To denote this greater importance of the plot are then for example also the particular side missions, which allow you to experience in a new light some events narrated during the main line of the quest.
The choice to leave the narrative aspect of Samurai Warriors 5 to the brave deeds of the young Oda Nobunaga and Mitsuhide Akechi in short, it turns out to be a winner both in the eyes of a historical fan and in the eyes of a newcomer to the series. Let’s understand, it is not anything transcendental, but in the work of Omega Force the plot is no longer a simple filler between a pitched battle and the other as in similar works, but something with its own reason for being.
Duels and battles
Moving on to the actual gameplay, Samurai Warriors 5 presents everything you would expect to find from such a title. Hundreds and hundreds of enemies, ranks of brave warriors and the inevitable game maps full of streets and lanes in which to channel yourself between one clash and another: if you have already played an episode of the series or a Dynasty Warrior you will definitely feel at home.
To strike positively is the fluidity of the gameplay, with the moveset of the various characters that manages to be particularly sinuous and make the various fights very beautiful to see as well as fun to play. The various hits and special powers of each of the 27 different playable characters of Samurai Warriors 5 are in fact ringed in fast and harmonious combos, with the passage between one blow and the other that does not show the side to any kind of criticality.
In addition to being particularly fluid, the gameplay of Samurai Warriors 5 is also characterized by a pretty good play system. Between light and heavy attacks, special moves, rage mode and musou bar, the weapons in the player’s hand during the various clashes are in fact different and manage not to make the gameplay too stale and repetitive. Very intriguing are above all the clashes with the various opposing commanders and heroes, of the situations in which the indiscriminate slaughter of minions leaves room for more reasoned duels. The camera lock and a parry system capable of deflecting the opponent’s assault if used with the right timing can in fact give the title an appreciated tactical vein and moments capable of varying the pace of play.
What is not convincing is the AI of the various troops, which is extremely dated and not sufficient. Although from the slaughterhouse like the poor soldiers of a musou you could not expect who knows what, it is evident that seeing hundreds and hundreds of soldiers making beautiful figurines or getting stuck in elements of the scenery is not at all a good show in late 2021. .
To complete the offer on the playful level of Samurai Warriors 5 are then a roundup of RPG elements, ranging from classic skill trees up to the blacksmith, through weapon skills, mastery levels and much more. A long series of more or less small mechanics, which greatly enrich the overall experience, increasing the chances in the player’s hand.
Samurai with style
One of the main points of interest of Samurai Warriors 5 is, needless to go around it too much, the new artistic direction, with the fifth episode of the saga that abandons the realistic style that had characterized the previous episodes to embrace cel shading. Certainly a particular choice, which, in the test of facts, convinces greatly. The design of the various characters is indeed of value and succeeds in significantly raise the overall quality of the game, also making the various special shots more aesthetically integrated within the title.
On the other hand, the various environments are not fully convincing, which in most cases are too bare and with certainly not sensational textures. Nothing too penalizing, but the gap between the care placed on the warriors of the Sengoku era and that on their battlefields is definitely evident.
