More and more gadgets are getting connected, but the keychain, bag and family members are things that mostly stay offline. With lost phones, there are often built-in functions to find out where they are, but for a bag, it’s a little trickier. One product that solves the problem is connected or Bluetooth-connected tags, something Samsung is now trying out.
The company’s new product in the genre is called Galaxy Smart Tag and is a small puck that is powered by a CR2032 battery and helps keep track of the stuff. Tags for the purpose are nothing new, but most are Bluetooth based and thus limited in range. Another option is tags that use the mobile network, which usually requires an extra subscription.
Samsung’s variant instead uses the fact that Samsung Galaxy phones are common and devices that pass near a tag can pick up the energy-efficient Bluetooth LE signal that Smart Tag sends. Information about the tag’s position is then sent to the Smartthings Find server, which constantly updates the owner on where the puck was last noted. Owners of Galaxy phones must have Android 8 or later, and in addition approve offline finding.
With the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra or Z Fold 2, the more powerful wireless technology Ultra Wideband Radio (UWB) can also be combined with augmented reality, to snoop right on the lost. However, this requires a version of the tag called Smart Tag +. Other features include allowing friends and family members to see the position of the tags, and integration with the smart home. The enclosure class is IP53 – dust protection and the ability to survive a water shower.
Smart Tag can be pre-sold after Galaxy Unpacked, but initially only the colors black and beige will be available, and this in one or two packs. In the future, a four-pack will also be released where the color choices mint green and pink are added. In terms of price, a tag costs SEK 349, a two-pack lands at SEK 599 and SEK 990 is the price for four.
