Samsung imagines a connected bandage capable of measuring your heart rate

The Korean company has just formalized a prototype of a flexible, stretchable and adhesive screen capable of attaching to the skin to measure its heart rate.

After connected watches and bracelets, is Samsung about to revolutionize the wearable dedicated to health? Perhaps, at least if we are to believe this new prototype developed by engineers from the SAIT (Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology) division of the company. Designed as a stretchable and adhesive screen, this accessory of a new kind could indeed make it possible to measure and display the heart rate of its user, by sticking itself directly on the skin. “The SAIT research team was able to integrate an OLED display and a photoplethysmogram (PPG) sensor into a single device to measure and display the user’s heart rate in real time” Samsung thus indicates in a press release.

Marketing already planned

If the idea behind the project was above all to demonstrate the viability of such a device, it would seem that it exceeded the company’s expectations. Thus, Samsung would consider working on a marketable version of its stretchable OLED screen, in particular via its integration with other types of wearables. It must be said that the project already looks very promising, and that it could for example diversify its skills, in particular by making it possible to measure the oxygen saturation of the blood, the rate of perspiration or the blood pressure.

However, this connected dressing capable of displaying your health data in real time is not yet on the way to the market. Before it can offer its prototype for sale, Samsung will still have to make a lot of progress, starting with the increase of the definition of its flexible screen, which currently peaks at 7 × 17 pixels, or the equivalent of a simple clock radio.
