Samsung Electronics announced on the 22nd that it has obtained the International Common Criteria (CC) certification for 5G mobile communication equipment.
CC certification is an ISO 15408 international standard for evaluating the security of IT products, and can be obtained only by verifying whether or not it satisfies common evaluation criteria among the security evaluation criteria managed by countries around the world.
Samsung Electronics began a security review of 5G mobile communication base stations with Lightship, a Canadian security evaluation company, from January last year and completed it in November, and registered it as a security product on the international CC portal.
In addition, in January 2021, the 5G mobile communication base station was registered as a security certification product (Product Compliant List, PCL) managed by the National Information Assurance Association (NIAP) under the National Security Agency (NSA) for the first time in the industry. It was also listed on (CSE)’s Certified Product (CP) list.
In the case of the United States and Canada, additional security verification and authentication steps are being operated by establishing their own information security system in parallel with the international standard CC certification.
As Samsung Electronics is expanding its business in various fields as well as supplying 5G commercial networks in North America, it is pushing for CC certification to improve product reliability.
Last year, Samsung Electronics signed a large-scale 5G commercial supply contract with Verizon, the world’s largest mobile communication service provider, and was selected as a mobile communication equipment supplier for 5G technology verification by the US Department of Defense.
In addition, it is continuously expanding its 5G mobile communication business in North America by entering 4G/5G commercial business with Canada’s TELUS and Videotron.
“As 5G mobile communication connects individuals, industries, and society in real time, securing information security is becoming more important than anything else,” said Seohyeong Jeong, executive director of Samsung Electronics’ Network Division. “Samsung Electronics is committed to supply chain integrity, real-time communication with customers and society. In addition to communication, we will solidify our position as a reliable 5G supplier through strict security certification for our products.”
