Sampaio: Marcelo, Ferro and Costa receive funeral procession in Belém – Economy


The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Ferro Rodrigues, and the Prime Minister, António Costa, received this Saturday the funeral procession of former head of State Jorge Sampaio, in Belém, at 11:10 am .

Before the opening of the burning chamber to the public, the three highest figures of the State accompanied the arrival and entry of the urn in the former royal arena, later adapted to Museu dos Coches, next to Belém Palace, in Lisbon, together with the family of Jorge Sampaio.

Covered by the national flag, the urn with the body of Jorge Sampaio arrived in Belém transported in a hearse, from which it was removed by cadets of the Armed Forces. This moment was witnessed, in silence, by a few dozen people who were concentrated behind the stalls placed on the other side of the road.

Jorge Sampaio’s funeral procession arrived at 10:36 am at Praça do Município de Lisboa, in what was the first moment of public homage this Saturday to the former President of the Republic.

Awaiting the funeral procession of Jorge Sampaio, who was also mayor of Lisbon between 1990 and 1995, were family members, the current president of the municipal executive, Fernando Medina, councilors, municipal deputies, parish presidents and candidates in the municipal councils on 26th September, among other entities.

The Government decreed three days of national mourning, between Saturday and Monday, for the death of former President of the Republic Jorge Sampaio, and state funeral ceremonies. Former President of the Republic Jorge Sampaio died on Friday aged 81, in the hospital in Santa Cruz.
