The body of a vehicle refers to the external structure that gives it shape. It is the sheet that covers and protects the chassis, which would be the skeleton of the car. There are numerous types of bodies and we can classify them by the shape of the chassis, the number of seats and how the interior space of the car is distributed, how many doors it has, its size, the shape of the rear and the height of the vehicle.

Therefore, not only the appearance of the car will depend on the body, but also its shape, capacity and size, all redundant in its functionality. So, if you are thinking of buying a car, you are interested in knowing the most common body types to find out which one best suits your needs.

Main body types 1

Urban, compact or utilitarian. The urban or utility is one of the smaller body sizes, perfect for driving through the city and parking without difficulty. They can have between three and five doors.

Coupe. It is also small in size, usually two-seater, although there are also models with five doors. It usually has a flattened appearance at the rear.

Sedan. The sedan has three volumes – the engine space, the cabin space and the trunk space – with the trunk occupying a separate space that extends from the rear window, so the tailgate is smaller. We usually refer to this particularity as the “ass” of the car.

Sedan. It is very similar to the sedan in that it also has three independent volumes, although it is larger and has a tailgate instead of the fixed window.

Convertible. Convertible cars are also known as roadster, speedster o spider. Basically they are those whose hood or roof is retracted to leave the cabin open to the air.

Sports. Sports cars are recognized for having a lower and thinner shape, with an athletic appearance. They often have aerodynamic designs and very powerful engines, as well as being luxury cars. Regarding its capacity, they can be two or four seats, as well as three or five doors.

All terrain. These are large cars, with two volumes and five doors. Its main feature is a high and robust design, ideal for steep terrain and for walking through nature.

minivan. The minivan is similar to a van, in that both the cabin and the trunk share the same space. They are spacious and can accommodate several passengers, as they usually incorporate a third row of seats, as well as plenty of cargo in the trunk.

Two volumes. Here the engine occupies a separate hood, while the cabin and trunk occupy the same space. They are also known as family cars or station wagon and they also stand out for being spacious.

SUV. Respond to acronyms “spor utility vehicle” or sport utility vehicle. It merges some elements of conventional compact tourism with the SUV. It is more spacious and elevated than the first, without reaching the dimensions of the latter.

Pickup. The pickup or ranchera shows a design similar to the SUV in its front part, only that the rear part is a large open trunk.
