Sakellaropoulou: Need to support the book

The President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, inaugurated the 50th Book Festival on Monday evening in Zappeion, which this year includes tributes to the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor Disaster, as well as to the work of Iakovos Campanellis.

During her greeting, Mrs. Sakellaropoulou underlined the need to support the book, pointing out that it is “closely connected to the cultural evolution of society and is a vehicle of real but also symbolic power”, while at the same time she congratulated the Association of Book Publishers, the Ministry of Development and Investments for the co-organization of this beautiful celebration, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, the Athens Chamber of Commerce, the Organization for Culture, Sports and Youth of the Municipality of Athens and all those who worked to get thousands of books from the warehouses to the stalls , giving us the pleasure to browse, discuss, buy and read them, active participants in an exciting adventure.

In particular, during her greeting at the opening of the 50th Book Festival in Zappeio, the President of the Republic said:

“I am very happy to be among you today. ‘I’m here too’ – to use the phrase I saw many authors choose to announce their participation in the great celebration of the book, an institution now fifty years old. It is an anniversary that gives us the occasion to reflect on the contribution of the people of the publishing industry to Greek society, to honor their energy, passion, persistence and resilience despite the difficult times we are going through. Events like this one, with its impressive range of participation and its diverse, interesting events, prove the vitality and dynamic adaptation of the publishing space to the demands of the new reality, as well as its constant interest in the development of dialogue, the exchange of ideas, of the critical approach to the social and spiritual issues of our time.

The book, closely linked to the cultural evolution of society, is a carrier of real as well as symbolic power. Its production and promotion involves a multitude of factors, since in addition to being a sensitive cultural asset it is also a commercial product. That is precisely why, as free and rich as its circulation is, so composed, strong and long-term must be the planning of its route. Always with the help of the State, which is even more necessary in these times of prolonged and multidimensional crisis, so that the shocks of the global economy do not drag down the fragile publishing world. His support is an obligation of all of us.

However, this year’s fiftieth anniversary of the institution fills me with optimism. The reader’s solitary encounter with the text, their secret conversation, here, in the corridors of the Zappeion, between the booths, near the authors and publishers, is validated, deepened, opened to the other and confirms the silent bond that unites the readers to each other .

Inaugurating the Book Festival, which this year includes tributes to the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe, as well as to the work of the great Iakovos Campanellis, I want to first of all congratulate the Association of Book Publishers. I would also like to congratulate the Ministry of Development and Investment for co-organizing this beautiful celebration, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, the Chamber of Commerce of Athens, the Organization for Culture, Sports and Youth of the Municipality of Athens and all those who worked to reach thousands of books from the warehouses to the stalls of the kiosks, giving us the pleasure of browsing, discussing, buying and reading them, active participants in an exciting adventure.”
