Moscow – Today, Russia started a large-scale Vostok 2022 (East 2022) military exercise, in which the armies of China and other countries are also participating. The AP agency wrote that his goal is to show that Moscow and Beijing are increasing military cooperation at a time of strong tension in relations with the United States. Russia also wants to show that even at the time of the invasion in Ukraine, it has sufficient capacities for large-scale maneuvers in the Far East and in the Sea of Japan.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said that more than 50,000 soldiers will take part in the exercise, including 140 aircraft and 60 warships. The maneuvers, in which members of the armed forces of other post-Soviet republics, China, India, Laos, Mongolia or Syria also participate, are personally supervised by the Chief of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov. The Russian and Chinese navies will practice “joint action in the protection of sea lanes, economic zones and cooperation with land forces” in the Sea of Japan.

Beijing has sent over 2,000 troops to Russia with more than 300 military vehicles, about 20 warplanes and three warships, Chinese media reported.

The maneuvers are evidence of deepening military cooperation between Moscow and Beijing, which intensified after the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24. China refuses to criticize Russian aggression and accuses the United States and NATO of provoking Moscow. Beijing condemned the harsh sanctions imposed by the West on Russia over the invasion. In turn, Russia has clearly sided with China at a time of heightened tensions between Beijing and the United States after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently visited Taiwan. China considers this island as its rebel province.
