Russia and China sign a sports cooperation agreement

The agreement was signed in Beijing by the Russian Minister of Sports, Oleg Matytsin, and Gao Zhidan, director of the State General Administration of Sports in China.

Russian Prime Minister Mihail Mişuşin and the Premier of the State Council of China, Li Qiang, were present to witness the signing.

Both countries have committed to exchange information and experiences and to organize meetings and sports events.

High performance sport, youth sport and Paralympic sport are included, as well as sports science, sports technology and anti-doping.

The deal will be seen as a boost for Russia, which has been blocked from much of international sport since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

The country is looking for alternative sporting avenues with the Russian-Chinese Summer Youth Games currently taking place in the Chinese city of Chongqing.

Putin has also officially proposed that his government organize the “World Friendship Games” shortly after the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Russia hopes that the BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – could participate in these Games.

Matytsin proposed hosting the first Games of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which includes Russia, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, as well as a number of observer nations and dialogue partners.

“Cooperation with China in the field of sports has a stable long-term basis, we respect each other’s interests, exchange experience, respond to new challenges, shaping the present and future of sports in our countries,” Matytsin said, according to the state news agency Russian TASS.
