Man is the measure of everything, the sages said a long time ago. However, that scale often knows how to prevail in its opposite. About ten days ago, in the place-village of Begec, about twenty kilometers west of Novi Sad, exactly that “measure” hit the ground. She went red. It dropped to zero. Then followed the surprise, confusion and finally great disappointment and revolt of the inhabitants of Vojvodina and the whole of Serbia.

Namely, the Evangelical Church in Begec, from a still unknown person or several of them, received a threatening letter in which Slovaks from that place, imagine, are given a period of two to three months to move to the neighboring village of Glozan with a majority Slovak population.

A four-page handwritten letter left in the church’s mailbox was found by a woman in charge of preparing the place of worship there. She and the authorities from the church were silent about everything, most likely, so as not to disturb the believers and citizens in the multinational Begec.

Not the first threat

The public found out about the letter and its content only when a local, David Francistija, posted it on his Facebook profile. He had to, he explained later, because such things and phenomena are not kept silent. They must not push under the carpet.

“If you have the mind to leave! If you don’t have it, hell awaits you like our Serbs in Kosovo. Lajcak, take your stench from Begrc “- it is stated, among other things, in the found letter.

David Francistija reminded that this is not the first, but the fourth threatening letter in the past few years, which was sent to Slovaks, and about 500 of them live in Begec. That is how graffiti appeared on the facade of the church a few years ago: “Slovaks move out”.

David added that he did not personally feel scared, but insulted and humiliated, above all, that he was born in Begec and that several locals from his family, ie from the Slovak community, gave their lives during the Second World War and the fight against the Nazi occupiers. He considers the attribution of these serious outbursts to “frustrated” individuals to be inadequate, reminding them that the wicks for large fires and conflicts were never lit by nations, but by individuals.

Comments as a cure

Among numerous comments on the mentioned event, through social networks and other media, the majority agreed that it should be determined as soon as possible who writes letters with extremely inappropriate content at the expense of Slovaks who live in Begec together with Serbs, Ruthenians, Roma and other ethnic groups. “We do not give our Slovaks with whom we have lived in harmony and mutual respect for decades. We are all Vojvodina, regardless of the ethnic, racial and religious affiliation of its citizens. That is why Vojvodina is beautiful and unique. “

“I am a Slovak from Begec and I was mobilized in 1992 for 96 and 98 for my country, Serbia. I did not escape to Slovakia, although I could easily take refuge there. That is why my message is: arrest fools!

However, by officials at all levels, there were only a few silent reactions to this event, while minimizing the incident. A somewhat sharper reaction was heard from the announcement of the League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina (LSV). In addition to seeking an urgent reaction from the authorities to determine who sent the threatening letter to the Slovaks from Belgrade and with what motives, the statement of this political group reads: “Such threats are reminiscent of the nationalist savagery of the 1990s in Srem. Vojvodina belongs to all its citizens and there is no place for fascism and chauvinism, “LSV said in a statement.

A knife in the back and buying country houses

Even the heated action of buying abandoned and empty rural houses led by the Ministry of Village Care, with the wholehearted help of the state, the incident from Begec can disrupt its continuation in the next cycle, that is, the year. Namely, in this year’s action, during which over 500 young married couples from all over Serbia competed, for their house in the countryside, among those who were in the area of Vojvodina were among the most desirable and most sought after.

This region is not only synonymous with food production and agriculture, but also because of its multinational and multicultural structure is a real magnet for young people. This is shown by many studies. It may be rough to say, but the event in Begrc also looks like a so-called “knife” “In the back of the mentioned action which is fighting to save Serbian villages from their extinction and disappearance. And we need to think about that !?

Without the “damned” Jerina

Many things in life are not coincidences. Begec, a peaceful agricultural place known for its fishpond and excellent carrot producers, was named after “fugitives”. .

How, I wonder, would a naive painting by Zuzana Halupova from Kovacica, with Slovak roots, paint all this? Like an empty pumpkin intended for someone’s head for “Halloween” or in some other way? Her world-famous neighbor Mihajlo Pupin would most likely just wave his hand at everything. But, I’m sure, he wouldn’t feel comfortable!

Slovaks in Serbia have always been an example of truth and sincere coexistence, cooperation, understanding and support, with an undisguised desire to express themselves as successfully as possible with their work, artistic and other creative skills. Therefore, as far as I understand, primarily from their neighbors, the Slovaks from Begrc have no reason to

they are afraid of some new “damned” Jerina. Those who embarrass Serbia by moving out of their houses by the deadlines are undesirable. Absolutely! In addition to the citizens and the general public, the state should confirm that more clearly and louder, just more !!!
