Runflat Tires vs. the normal ones. How do we identify each one?

Tires are essential components for a car, which ensure a comfortable and safe journey. While standard tires are designed to withstand normal use, runflat tires are recommended for emergencies. You will find out what each one means, what the differences are and what the advantages are by reading this article.

What are runflat tires?

For several years now, many car manufacturers have removed the spare wheel to reduce weight. Others equip their cars with a full-size spare wheel. However, there are some manufacturers whose vehicles are equipped with an atypical spare wheel, of small dimensions. There is also runflat rubber on the market.

Unlike a standard tire, the runflat tire has thicker sidewalls. This feature helps you to continue driving safely in the event of a breakdown without the risk of accidents.

The condition is to drive over short distances and with speeds of up to 80-90 km / h. The goal is to last until you reach either a safe place to change the deflated tire or a vulcanization.

If you break the tire, the rigid substance in the sidewalls will take over the weight of the car if the tire loses pressure. Under these conditions, the rim will not come into direct contact with the tread. These tires are mounted on rims that prevent detachment when deflation occurs.

Runflat Vs. standard tires

A runflat tire has both advantages and disadvantages. The main benefit is that you can keep moving even if you have a tire failure or a wheel loses pressure.

Because the car is practically resting on this deflated tire, the steering and handling will be almost normal. In winter, maneuverability is not as smooth, while traction can be difficult due to the difficult road conditions in the cold season.

At the same time, “shoes” with runflat tires do not have a spare wheel, which means a lower weight. Thus, fuel consumption will be lower.

In terms of “minuses”, the runflat tire is about twice as expensive as a conventional one. It is also heavier than a standard tire. Travel quality may be affected by the stiffer side wall.

The number of vulcanizations that have the necessary equipment to replace or repair such tires is quite small. It is practically impossible to equip a car with runflat tires if they were not part of the standard equipment.

Wear in the case of a runflat tire is faster than in the case of a regular one. It is quite difficult to find this type of tire on the market, even in online stores.
