Roller hockey: Goalkeeper Xavier Malián renews with FC Porto until 2026

Spanish goalkeeper Xavier Malián has extended his contract with FC Porto for another three years, until 2026, announced today the national, European and world roller hockey champions, who ‘hold’ the usual holder of their goal.

“It is a very happy moment. I am very grateful to the club and to Eurico [Pinto, diretor da secção] for trusting me for years to come. I promise to give everything for FC Porto and I feel very happy when I represent this symbol that it represents so much. I only have words of thanks for the club and for the technical and management structure”, stressed the 33-year-old ‘guardian’, in statements reproduced on the club’s official website on the Internet.

Xavier Malián arrived at the ‘dragons’ in 2019/20, following nine seasons at Liceo da Coruña, for which he won a championship and two Spanish Super Cups, two Champions League, a Continental Cup and an Intercontinental Cup.

“The goal is to continue to improve. Every training session and game is an opportunity to improve and it’s clear that defending this symbol means winning every game. The goal is to win all the races and enjoy this long journey. Titles are the most important part of the journey, but it is also important that we are all happy to get closer to winning”, added the Catalan, who has already become world champion (2017) and twice European champion (2018 and 2021) for the Spanish national team and has added several successes at FC Porto.

In addition to having won a championship, a Portuguese Cup, an António Livramento Super Cup and an Elite Cup, the goalkeeper celebrated an Intercontinental Cup last season and, at the beginning of this month, a ‘Champions’, which had eluded the club for 33 years.

“I still remember the first interview I did here, where I said that my dream was to win the Champions League with FC Porto. That dream came true and I am very happy for the reward of all the work we have been developing over these years. We have to appreciate everything we’ve achieved, because it’s been many years since we’ve won such an important title and, above all, beating rivals at that level”, he admitted.

The ‘blue and whites’ made the contract renewal official with Xavier Malián on the eve of the reception to Oliveirense, in the third and decisive match of the quarter-finals of the play-off of the national championship, at a time when each team has a victory and a defeat.
