Take a hike in the forest and discover the traces of the ice age
What better way to enjoy Finland’s nature than to go hiking in the forest? There are numerous hiking trails in the Rokua Geopark area, both accessible short hiking trails and longer hiking trails. Rokua Geopark is located in the Oulujärvi camping area and Rokua National Park, so there are plenty of route options.
The nature of the Geopark is shaped by the ice age, which makes it special. Migratory boulders, gneiss rock and Finland’s deepest suppa offer a journey from the ice age to the present day, and special nature sites bring variety to the hike.
Popular hiking and trekking routes include the Lianjärvi barrier-free route starting from Rokua Health & Spa, the nature trail of the Liimanninkoski grove reserve, the Manamansalo deer trail, and the significantly longer Rokua Keisarinkierros and Oulujärvi camping area routes. The lengths vary from 1.2 kilometers to 19 kilometers. The terrain is easy to navigate. The routes are clearly marked Rokuan’s mountain biking map.
A brisk holiday in Rokua
In addition to hiking trips, it’s easy to take over Rokua’s nature either on a SUP board or on a mountain bike.
In Rokua, you can swim in, for example, the small Ahveroinen lake, which is located right in front of the Rokua Health & Spa spa hotel. You can also rent equipment at Jaakonjärvi, and there are also numerous other lakes in the area. So there are numerous opportunities for water excursions, but it’s also worth getting on a SUP board just to relax and enjoy the nature of the national park. In addition to SUP boards, Rokua’s waterways can also be paddled by canoe or kayak.
The mountain bike route in the Rokua area has been renewed during the years 2021–2022, so the selection of routes is versatile and the bike routes are in good condition. You can cycle both in the national park and in the nature reserve, but you must stay on the marked route. The longest route is a 30-kilometer ring route that takes cyclists along the landscapes of the Geopark.
Relax in a traditional spa
The Rokua spa hotel Rokua Health & Spa is the starting point or base for most Rokuan visitors, from which it is easy to make short or long trips. The opportunity to relax offered by the spa hotel is on most people’s minds when heading to Rokua.
The spa’s equipment includes a 25-meter fitness pool, warm water pools, two multipurpose pools and a small cold pool. A visit to the spa can be combined with a gym, lunch or, for example, a nap in the spa hotel’s bedroom.
The spa hotel is located in front of Ahveroinen, and the spa’s windows offer a green lake view. At Rokua Health & Spa, you can rent SUP boards, fatbikes and canoes, and the services also include fitness tests, a children’s playroom and spa services.
In addition to the spa’s swimming pools, the area also has other fun things to do for children, as the Pihka trick track that goes around Lake Ahveroinen is a free and exciting adventure track for the youngest members of the family.
