Amazon’s most expensive series, The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, has just been released.
At the moment, only 2 episodes have been released, according to which you can already add up the first impression. And already opinions are divided. Critics praise the novelty and give it the highest scores, while the audience vice versa.
On this basis, Amazon even banned viewer ratings in the next 3 days. The company believes that the haters greatly underestimate the rating. I’m not sure that’s exactly the case.
Personally, I was waiting for this series, I didn’t care about the agenda – as long as they did it well. What happened in the end? Let’s figure it out.
Return to Middle-earth
Let’s immediately discard the question of the racial affiliation of the actors. From the very beginning, Amazon said that the series does not take place in Tolkien’s universe, but in a parallel one.
The excuse is weak, but partially counted.
In the series, and without this, there are enough flaws both in canon and in general execution. Let’s start with the plot.
What is the series about: the story starts with the murder of the brother of the elf Galadriel. It bears the mark of the mighty dark wizard Sauron. She wants revenge on Sauron. But everything is not as simple and linear as we would like.
The very same action of the series takes place millennia before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings based on stories about Middle-earth from J. R. R. Tolkien. The series begins in a time of relative peace and covers all the major events of the Second Age of Middle-earth: the forging of the twenty Rings of Power, the rise of Sauron, the fall of the island kingdom of Numenor, and the final union of elves and humans.
The first questions are raised by the screening itself. The plot is not based on Tolkien’s books at its core, they were taken only as inspiration and general atmosphere. Here we create our own story, which takes bit by bit certain events, as well as characters from the original.
In general, the story is original. The reason for this is that there are no rights to all the books of the writer. So the authors had to get out in their own way.
Anyway, there is a basis. There are central characters, the main idea. Everything is as it should be. And it was done to a high standard. But not as high as you’d expect. Anyway, for now.
Each episode takes a leisurely pace (and each lasts more than an hour), and this can be scary from the very first frame. Even action-packed moments are presented to us measuredly and not hyperdynamically. But this is not such a minus, in fact. With each new 20-minute, new plot details are revealed to us and the characters are shown a little better.
Although, of course, it may seem otherwise. Especially in the part of Galadriel, who was originally made a warlike and self-confident elf. From the second episode, it will be shown from other sides.
Although Galadriel itself is difficult to compare with the laid down original of Peter Jackson. it completely different personalities and actresses. And it is the “serial” version of the heroine that loses.
Yes, what is there, some races have also been redone. The same elves no longer seem to be wise and elegant creatures, and the gnomes seem to have become much more stupid.
You can get mad at absolutely everything. But, you know, I personally don’t want to. They organically look in this universe, although they are strongly knocked out of the canon.
As for the plot itself, here I personally did not like the half-empty dialogues. They take the lion’s share of the time, but they do not carry any meaning.
They do not help to get to know the heroes better, they do not share the details of the era. And almost half of them.
The atmosphere is really captivating
What the authors of the series really succeeded in doing was to transfer the era itself and the fabulous fantasy cinematic universe.
Costumes, landscapes, chamber locations and much more look authentic. Especially, of course, panoramas catch the eye. Especially in the opening scene.
The story is neatly embedded in the narrative. and looks great against the backdrop of vast plains, mountains, caves and other things. It is the picture that plays with the viewer, further fueling interest in viewing.
Fighting scenes look spectacular, lively and natural. True, it is important to note here that they would have looked perfect if I had not known about the budget of the series.
Gradually, I accumulate a lot of claims to the lazy approach of the authors to creating characters. I don’t know what will happen next, but the same snow troll and wolf from the first episode did not look at the level of the budget of the most expensive series in history.
There are enough such flaws, and they are a little depressing. But nothing serious.
But the real “thank you” I want to say to the composer Bear McCreery, known for the music for the Battlestar Galactica and the game God of War. He completed his task by 100 points. His soundtrack is remembered and stored in the head for a long time.
In general, the musical component here is excellent. It helps to clearly understand what is happening on the screen and break through to new emotions.
Let’s give it a chance
The first impression of the new “Lord of the Rings” at the moment is very controversial.
It seems that the authors try and show respect for the original. However, expectations are too high, knowing the cast and budget. And in the first two episodes, they do not justify themselves at all. Feels like it could be better.
I hope that in the remaining 6 episodes it will be really better.
