Chatting with colleagues is no longer possible, and neither is eating together. How do canteens deal with the lockdown?
The district house
In the near future, members of the district council are likely to be found in the canteen of the district administration as often as employees who take care of themselves for their breakfast or lunch break. In the search for suitable meeting rooms that offer enough space even in times of the corona pandemic to enable meetings of politicians in accordance with the applicable hygiene regulations, the choice fell on the large room in the basement of the Siegburg district hall.
While the district council moves to the Rhein-Sieg-Halle for its meetings, the canteen is now the meeting place for many of the district parliament’s committees. Around half of the district’s almost 1,500 employees are currently still working in their offices. Until last week, they were able to take their break meals in the canteen, which is operated by an external caterer. This is no longer possible since the beginning of the week.
“Since Monday there has only been food and drink” to go “, consumption in the canteen is prohibited,” says district spokeswoman Rita Lorenz. External people who were also able to use the canteen before the pandemic began have been standing in front of doors that are closed to them for a long time. (pf)
Mask, one-way streets, large distances between the tables and fewer chairs: the Mannstaedt GmbH canteen in Troisdorf had been working in the pandemic for a long time.
But none of the nearly 700 employees, including trainees, will have to remain hungry in the future, said Managing Director Thomas Voss. “To go stays”, you will still be able to get bread in the morning, for example. A warm lunch is also offered, but the employees have to eat it elsewhere. “Preferably in a single office,” says the managing director.
The colleagues on the night shift are self-sufficient anyway, and the canteen closes in the early afternoon even during normal operations. However, these employees can also satisfy their hunger at vending machines in the individual companies. (dk)
The district court
Jan Gerull, press spokesman for the district town, regrets the temporary closure of the district court canteen: “That is totally missing.” “The food is very good”, especially the “Schnitzel Day” on Wednesday is popular. He eats there with colleagues once or twice a week. Above all, Gerull appreciates the opportunity to talk to employees from other institutions and the beautiful view of the city and the Michaelsberg. This was initially possible for the staff and visitors for the last time on Friday, and the canteen has been closed since then.
The employees of the Siegburg tax office have had to forego food from their canteen, which was closed before the pandemic, for a long time. In the long term, however, there should be canteen operations again, according to the authority. (Ah)
The canteen at the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences has been closed since December. “There are hardly any students left on campus, so that doesn’t make sense,” reports Robert Anders, press spokesman for the student union that runs the cafeteria. They agreed on this in discussions with the university. At times there was still a to-go operation with small dishes. But that too was discontinued due to a lack of demand. A vending machine now offers snacks.
“We are always in talks with the university,” emphasizes Anders. The canteen can be reopened quickly if necessary. “Even 150 filled rolls to be picked up can be lovingly lubricated without any problems.” At the moment, however, no changes are expected in the short term. (vr)
