Today we will talk about two new products of the JBL brand, which were presented in the middle of summer 2021. We even wrote about it in our weekly Saturday Coffee column.

In short, the 460 is an on-ear headphone, and the 660 is a full-size headphone.

The devices are very similar to each other both externally and in terms of characteristics: both a large emitter with a diameter of 40 mm is used, both gadgets are equipped with adaptive noise reduction technology, and work up to 50 hours. The only noticeable difference besides the type is the frequency range: it is slightly wider for the JBL Live 660 NC model.

Therefore, I decided to combine two accessories in one material.

The cost over time has dropped quite decently: for the Live 460 they asked for 9,000 rubles, now – 6,000 rubles, for the Live 660 they asked for 11,000 rubles, now – 9,000 rubles. This cannot but please potential buyers.

The main feature of the appearance of the headphones is the braided design of the headband. Probably, this design has already been used in the brand’s headphones, but this is the first time I see it. Looks fresh and quite stylish. The material is quite tough and durable to the touch. This is how the “casings” of modern JBL or Harman speakers look like. Now everything will be in style.

The younger version of Live 460 is available in four colors: black, white, pink and blue. The older one has a smaller “color gamut”: black, white and blue.

My review turned out to be the most trivial solutions: black and white. Probably, if you want to keep the appearance pristine, then you should take a closer look at the black color. Spots will appear on white over time. I have a portable speaker in white and similar materials. In a year, she turned from white to gray 🙂

The smaller headphones weigh 210 grams, the larger ones – 265 grams. The difference is only 55 grams, and the dimensions vary greatly.

Of course, the Live 460 is much more compact and can easily fit into a jacket pocket. But Live 660 will have to be put in a backpack. By the way, both gadgets are foldable.

The cups of the devices are made of plastic. Thin, unpretentious to the touch. The strangest thing is the slightly dangling buttons. This is especially noticeable on Live 660.

The filling of the ear pads is different: the younger model has something like foam rubber, while the older model uses a material with a memory effect (squeeze it, and it keeps its shape for a while). The outer part is made of eco-leather.

The inner part of the headband is soft fabric, the outer part is dense woven fabric. The filling is the same as that used in the ear pads.

Elements on the body

Both devices have exactly the same number of elements with the same arrangement.

On right cup the maximum possible is found, it is not even very clear why the part could not be transferred to the left cup:

  • Power Lever
  • Three buttons: volume up / down, play / pause. In addition, there are various additional functions such as rewinding, rejecting or accepting a call. I will not describe – look at the instructions.
  • 2.5mm jack for wired connection to a smartphone or other gadget. The cable is included, with a standard 3.5 mm cable at the end.
  • Bluetooth patterned button. Used to switch between connected devices. The model supports the so-called Multi-point connection
  • Choose between enabling ANC, Ambient aware and Talkthru
  • Small indicator of device operation

On left cup:

  • USB Type-C
  • Charge indicator

A full reset is performed by holding the volume buttons for five seconds.

Head landing

It is worth saying that the headphones are equipped with sensors that respond to the position of the headphones. As soon as you take them off, the music is paused, put on – playback begins.

The JBL Live 460 headphones are over-ear headphones. That is, the ear pads are applied to the auricle. It seemed to me that the 460 squeezed the head too much. In about two minutes I would like to improve the situation, to remove it for a while. Of course, it all depends on the anatomical features of the head and ears.

The JBL Live 660 headphones are full-size headphones. The ear cushions completely cover your ears. In this case, the headphones fit so tightly to the head that you begin to hear even silence. Passive noise cancellation here wow! Again, it seems to me that the squeezing is more than normal. Maybe it’s because of the novelty of the device and you need to be in Live 660 for a month or two.

In general, everyone chooses headphones for themselves. For example, overheads are good to use when traveling: they are compact, comfortable and sound quality is almost as good as full-size ones.

At home or in the office, you can use the full-size ones. Such headphones are more massive, larger, but the sound, as a rule, is better than that of on-ear headphones.

About sound

Both the Live 460 and 660 have a 40 mm diaphragm. This is a large emitter size, especially for on-ear headphones.

Frequency characteristics are slightly different: the Live 460’s low frequencies start at 20 Hz, while the Live 660 starts at 16 Hz. It is rather difficult to determine this by ear, but it seems to me that the older model has a deeper bass, it spreads softly over a wide stage.

In the case of the Live 460, the bass is slightly weaker, there is no depth, but for this type of headphone the low frequencies are pleasant.

I highlight the very wide scene again in both models. Sound flies around you, does not concentrate at one point. It immediately becomes clear how exactly the melody was conceived in terms of the location of the instruments / sounds. It seems to me that this is a proprietary feature of JBL: headphones can do this even for little money. Cool!

Otherwise, I did not feel the difference in sound. As usual, the mids are very well developed in JBL headphones, the voice sounds excellent, clear. There are no questions for the high ones either.

As a result, you get great sound: spacious, rich, enveloping, clear and sonorous.

Both models feature Active Adaptive Noise Cancellation. This technology works equally well. However, the Live 660 “crushes” noise more strongly due to its powerful passive “noise suppression”. Simply put, the earbuds fit tighter to the head and thereby eliminate unnecessary external sounds.

Compared to ANC, it falls short of Bose QC. But JBLs are much cheaper.

As a headset, I liked the Live 460. The interlocutor does not feel the effect of the headset. In Live 660 there is a slight “big room” sound, as if a person is talking to you on the phone, not on the speakerphone, but holding the microphone at a distance.

In terms of volume, everything is excellent, the quality is very high, the sound is clear and legible.

During the test, not a single interlocutor spoke negatively about the transmission of speech through the headphones.

Working hours

The batteries in the JBL Live 460 and 660 are the same – 750 mAh. The manufacturer claims that with ANC enabled, they will work for 40 hours, without “noise reduction” – for 50 hours.

After two weeks of listening (about 2 hours a day), I put the batteries down to about 20%. It is rather difficult to calculate more accurately due to the fact that I listened to music at 50%, then at 80%, sometimes I made calls and so on. In any case, the autonomy is excellent.

Quite good classic headphones from the JBL brand with all the consequences:

  • Nice sound
  • Availability of adaptive noise reduction technology
  • High-quality speech transmission in headset mode
  • Excellent autonomy
  • Wireless and wired connection

  • No support for Hi-Res codecs
  • Flimsy control buttons

I have no more questions for the JBL Live 460 NC and 660 NC.
