Reuters: Russia resumed gas supplies to Latvia last week on Friday

Vilnius – On Friday, August 5, Russia resumed supplies of natural gas to Latvia. According to Reuters, this is shown by the records of the gas transmission system operator Conexus Baltic Grid. The Russian state gas company Gazprom stopped deliveries to Latvia on July 30, justifying it by violating the conditions for the purchase of raw materials.

Latvian gas company Latvijas Gaze said a day before the supply interruption that it pays for the gas it buys from Russia in euros, not in rubles, as Moscow is now demanding. According to Reuters, it is not yet clear why supplies to Latvia have resumed.

The situation surrounding Russian gas supplies to the European Union became complicated when Russia launched an attack on Ukraine in February and the European Union adopted a series of anti-Russian sanctions in retaliation. According to the Latvian agency LETA, since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Russia has already limited gas supplies to Latvia several times.

Edijs Šaicáns, who is in charge of energy policy at the Ministry of Economy in Riga, said after the supply interruption at the end of July that the move was unlikely to have any significant impact on Latvia. Riga has already decided to stop buying gas from Russia from next year.
