residents of Berdyansk told about life under occupation — UNIAN

High prices, strange rules, intimidation and a complete lack of tourists – residents of the city do not like “Russian peace”.

Residents of the temporarily occupied Berdyansk spoke about the situation in the city. People feel like prisoners in a colony.

They told the newspaper about it “Radio Liberty”.

Berdyansk is a resort town, most of the residents earn money in the summer, at the height of the season. However, there are no tourists this year. Residents say that the lack of income is a real tragedy for them. Cafe and restaurant owners also complain about the lack of customers.

“For nine months of the off-season, we feed ourselves with the money earned in the summer. We’ve almost finished what we saved for a rainy day, we have no idea what to do next. The lack of vacationers is a failure, it’s a hungry winter,” said a local hotel business owner.

The occupiers are trying to assure the residents of the city that soon everything will be fine. They started repairing some roads and promise to restore gas supply. However, the locals do not believe the tales of the Rashists. They believe that all this “generosity” is only for people to stop waiting for the Armed Forces.

“Why is this being done? To make us understand that there are, as it were, new owners, Ukraine will not be here, do not wait for de-occupation, we are trying for you. They invest money in us, try to buy, and the people of Berdyan accept everything as it should be. Let more money for repairs mean less money for rockets,” said one of the city’s residents.

The locals really don’t like the fact that the occupiers hung their tricolors and slogans everywhere. It oppresses people, the racists impose their ideology on them. As one woman admitted, among the bigboards with Russian flags it is even difficult for her to breathe. People feel like prisoners in a colony the size of a city.

The “authority” controlled by the occupiers is trying to recruit workers. Neither teachers nor policemen are enough. Of course, many refused to work for the enemy. However, there are those who had no choice or who deliberately sided with the occupiers.

Teachers who refused to teach children the Russian curriculum are afraid to conduct lessons online and work remotely in Ukrainian schools. Neighbors and other “good” people can “rent” such teachers to the occupiers.

People have almost no money. Racists offer residents “financial assistance” in exchange for passport data, but it is very difficult to obtain. Queues, confusion everywhere. It is almost impossible for elderly people to get “help” from the occupiers.

The city also has a big problem with prices. People are actively profiting from “bribery”. Locals have to order some goods from sellers who bring them from Zaporizhzhia. It is quite problematic to buy medicines, because the prices for them are “screwed up” even more than for products.

“We’re used to the fact that food is expensive, you won’t order cereals and oil. But we do order hygiene products, for example. Imagine, deodorant here costs 150-200 hryvnias… And so with everything. Detergent for crockery, UAH 60-80, and for controlled goods, UAH 40. Many people bring or receive parcels and resell them, the business of resellers is flourishing here,” said a resident of the city.

In addition, the developers move new residents into their apartments who do not pay for utilities and rent. More and more people who look like Buryats are noticed in the city, and the military transports their families to Berdyansk.
