Renault Master received two new versions on hydrogen – DRIVE

A minibus for 15 passengers (nine seats, there is a ramp for wheelchairs) the public saw on November 16 in Paris at the Salon des Maires show. The chassis for the equipment installation was presented at the same time at the Solutrans exhibition in Greater Lyon.

Hydrogen commercial vehicles can attract fleets by combining a relatively long range with very fast refueling (just five minutes) and zero emissions. Therefore, a joint venture between the Renault group and the American company Plug Power, Hyvia, decided to develop this direction. Following the Renault Master Van H2-Tech van shown in October, the promised brothers Master Chassis Cab H2-Tech and Master City Bus H2-Tech are now presented, capable of covering 250 and 300 km at a single gas station. A petrol station is also offered along with the cars. Newcomer sales will begin in 2022.

A body with a volume of up to 19 cubic meters can be put on the chassis. The general equipment of the models: fuel cells with a capacity of 30 kW, a battery for 33 kW • h. The chassis received two cylinders for three kilograms of hydrogen compressed to 700 bar, the passenger van received a balloon for 4.5 kg of hydrogen at a pressure of 350 bar.

Conventional passenger cars with hydrogen gas have not yet become widespread due to a number of factors, including the high price and low number of gas stations. Both are like a vicious circle, largely dependent on the volume of production. The addition of hydrogen commutrans can act as a catalyst. The cost is not critical here, but ease of use with high mileage and minimization of downtime are very important. With an increase in the production of such vehicles, the need for hydrogen fuel will be higher and the cost of key components – fuel cells and cylinders – will decrease. Therefore, recently we have seen exotic hydrogen microvans for city centers, call taxis or drone shuttles.
