Renault charged with diesel emissions

French investigators have accused Renault of fraud in connection with diesel engine emissions. The investigation is linked to a scandal that erupted when Volkswagen was admitted to cheating on tests nearly six years ago.

Renualt must pay a bail of 20m euros and provide a bank guarantee of 60m euros to cover potential compensation, penalties and compensation, the French company said.

At the same time, Renault has denied violating the regulations.

The company emphasizes that its vehicles are not equipped with any software that sets the results for pollution control devices and that it has always complied with French and European regulations.

The allegations are based on an investigation launched in early 2017, days after Volkswagen reached an agreement on lawsuits in the United States and admitted responsibility.

Renault states that, unlike Volkswagen, it did not use illegal devices to activate the control program in the laboratory. Such devices enabled the emission of larger amounts of harmful substances in real driving.

“Renault has not deceived anyone. According to what we know from the Volkswagen case, the situation for Renault is not the same. We don’t have cheating devices in our cars and we never had them, “said Jules de Born, head of the engineering department at the French company, as reported by Auto News.

The engines that were investigated were installed in vehicles from 2009 to 2011 and from 2013 to 2017. The full scope of the investigation has not yet been defined.

De Born claims that the technology against nitric oxide pollution at that time had known shortcomings and that it was functional only in optimal conditions at lower speeds.
