Renault may have surprised many with the arrival of the ARKANA model, the SUV coupe body is not very worn in this category. However, it must be acknowledged that this is a testament to the novelty. We tested the Arkana with the E-TECH drive, which we encountered earlier in the Captur model. However, the E-TECH system uses a plug-in hybrid drive system, while the Arkana is a classic parallel full hybrid. As we found out while driving, the hybrid system is tuned differently.

Typical features of the car include a higher position behind the wheel, a spacious cabin, a large volume of luggage space and an impressive sports style. The tested version of the E-TECH Hybrid 145 was in the top RSLine equipment, which further emphasizes the original, sporty design. The hybrid system uses a unique technology that, according to the manufacturer, comes from Formula 1 and contains more than 150 patented solutions. The E-TECH Hybrid drive system works in principle as a parallel hybrid system. It consists of a four-cylinder 1.6-liter petrol engine of 64 kW (94 hp) and a pair of electric motors – one with 36 kW and the other a high-voltage starter generator HSG (High-Voltage Starter Generator) with an output of 15 kW. The total system power reaches 105 kW. Power transmission is provided by a unique multi-mode automatic transmission, which uses four gears in hybrid mode and two gears in electric mode. Its synchronization during shifting is ensured by the starter generator. The E-TECH Hybrid uses a 1.2 kWh (230 V) Li-ion battery located under the boot. As with other hybrids, the battery is only charged while decelerating and braking or via the internal combustion engine. The vehicle will accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 10.8, reaching a top speed of 172 km / h. In electric mode, the speed is limited to 75 km / h.

On the positive side, the headlights are completely equipped with LED technology and include a typical C-Shape light signature, which can also be found at the rear, along with a bar that extends across the entire width of the tailgate. In addition to the lower equipment, the RS Line features a package that includes a color version and a chassis rear cover, a body-colored underbody protection strip, a black roof and a glossy black spoiler. The interior with the carbon decor of the dashboard and the door with a red bar along the upper part of the dashboard with a black ceiling is also very elegant and well-crafted. The perforated leather steering wheel and leather / alcantara seat upholstery are decorated with elegant and sporty red stitching, which is also on the door panels. The seat belts are highlighted by a red stripe. The whole is complemented by aluminum pedals, an e-shifter selector and RS Line labels.

The technological equipment is also rich. The 10.2 “digital instrument panel is complemented by a central 9.3” portrait display. The vehicle is equipped with assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control with column function. Active emergency braking with detection of cyclists and pedestrians alerts the driver to a dangerous situation and, if the driver does not react, starts braking. There is also automatic high beam switching, blind spot signaling, speed limit recognition, speed limit warning, 360 ° camera, active rear approach traffic (Rear Cross Traffic), front, rear and side parking assist, as well as Easy Park Assist (parking assistant vertically, diagonally or along the road). It is an older type of system that only controls the steering, with the accelerator and brake controlled by the driver. However, it works reliably.

Renault Arkana with E-TECH drive is a very interesting choice for the role of a family car. As soon as you sit down, you will be pleasantly surprised by the top interior design with quality materials and a very nice and cozy design. The soft red additional strips and quilting, which you will find outside on the aluminum discs as well, are impressive. The cab is spacious and airy and provides plenty of space in the rear seats. Despite the body of the SUV coupe, a large volume of the trunk has been preserved, so the family does not have to be especially modest when traveling.

The expression of the E-TECH hybrid system is very cultivated during normal driving, and most of the time you don’t even know when the system advises. However, during rapid acceleration, the hybrid effect is relatively pronounced when the internal combustion engine roars at high speed and the onset of power is delayed. It’s not something you can’t get used to, but you have to try it and reckon with it. During normal driving, you only know by the indicator when the internal combustion engine is switched on and when you only go for electricity. Despite the fact that the system uses a relatively small part of the battery capacity during operation, the ride is very economical and in the city and districts consumption can normally be achieved even below the declared 4.9 l / 100 km. Current off-highway consumption was 4.8 l / 100 km, the total consumption in the test, including the highway, was 5.1 l / 100 km. The vehicle is very well and pleasantly steered and thanks to the higher seat you have a good view.
