By the way, 35 member states, including Serbia, are participating in the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. The reason why the Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and the Ministry of Culture “punished” Goldstein and Matausic certainly has its roots in politics, because they are obviously unsuitable for the Croatian government as researchers who approached this sensitive topic exclusively from scientific and not political dimensions. .

– I informed my colleagues and friends from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance about what is happening in Croatia, so Stockholm now knows all the circumstances – Ivo Goldstein, who is the author of many books about the Holocaust, told “Novosti”. – This is proof of how personnel are selected, and as long as loyalty is the top criterion in this country, it will not be good. I will survive without this engagement, but it is unfortunate that politics interferes in everything.

Goldstein has been involved in Alliance projects since 2005, when Croatia became a member. By the way, his fellow historian Goran Hutinec resigned when he saw what was happening.

Goldstein and Matausic were replaced by other members, Adriana Bencic, who worked as a curator in Jasenovac, and advisor to the Minister of Culture Dubravka Djuric Nemec, and professor of Judaism and author of several works on the Holocaust, Naida Michal Brandl. Professor Goldstein himself claims that the newly elected members of the working bodies have less experience than the dismissed ones.

Historian Natasa Matausic says for our paper that she has retired and that she is thanked for her cooperation, but she will continue with part of the work in the future. Especially because next year two conferences are being prepared in Zagreb and Dubrovnik.

– Dr. Goldstein, who is also one of the most famous experts researching the Holocaust in Croatia, is certainly the most affected in the move to change the members of the working group. Obviously, there are many reasons for his removal, and politics is always at work – Natasa Matausic told “Novosti”, a historian who has the invaluable merit of “pulling out of oblivion” Diana Budisavljevic who saved children from Ustasha death camps.

Matausic was a member of the Working Group for Memorials and Museums, and Goldstein was a member of the Academic Working Group.

– Politics is always present somewhere, as opposed to science and scientists – says historian Mataušić, who was also the president of the Management Board of the Jasenovac Memorial Area for a long time. – And the public still knows little about the research related to the genocide of Serbs and Roma, although research exists. Some projects are being implemented, but their results have not reached the public.

For her, however, there is no longer any dispute, at least when it comes to the scientific approach to the Holocaust and the victims of the Holocaust.

– It is clear that the Independent State of Croatia was a criminal state and there is really no dispute about that – Natasa Matausic tells us.

There is still a dispute over the cadres, those who are suitable and those who are less eligible, and it will certainly be interesting how the international experts who gathered in Stockholm at the session of the International Alliance for Holocaust Remembrance will react to the Croatian staffing model.

Goldstein is also a former diplomat, he was the Croatian ambassador to France, and when President Zoran Milanovic recently proposed him to be ambassador again, the ruling HDZ vigorously opposed it, claiming that he had a picture of Josip Broz in his office in Paris.
