Remote access to the machine and the system must be simple and secure

The fourth industrial revolution means that with digital transformation we are taking the step towards intelligent production. This transformation requires human, machine and product communication, which creates new demands and challenges on the industry’s network security.

Phoenix Contact is a leading network provider that develops components, systems and solutions for industrial communication in all its forms. They help their customers increase their competitiveness through safer and smarter production with maximum efficiency and flexibility.

Our reality and behavior have changed in the last year

The current Corona situation with all the restrictions it entails with travel, makes starting up machines, updating software, patch management and accessing facilities extremely difficult. Many companies do not accept visits. Flights are canceled, the authorities recommend us to work from home.

At the same time as the requirements for industry are, at least one maintained, but also in many cases also increased production. The implication of this is that the requirements for a stable and secure remote connection to the manufacturing machine become very obvious.

Remote connection must be Secure, Stable, Clear and Simple!

The risk with remote connections is that you open a door to your production and facility and thus become exposed. To make this opening / connection as secure as possible, it is recommended that you pack the data traffic in an encrypted so-called VPN tunnel. In order for this tunnel to be as secure as possible and for no one to be able to manipulate the data on the road over the Internet between machine and technician, an encryption key (Certificate) is also required. If you have many different connections, there will be quite a lot of administration to handle these certificates, as these are installed on the machines as well as on the computers that the staff use and which must connect to the machines. People who quit and start companies must have different rights to connect to different machines. In addition, some people will only have access to the facility for a limited time. The more machines, the more different people to connect, the more administration.

To simplify this process and give machine builders a ready-made concept, Phoenix Contact has developed a platform with a focus on remote connections called mGuard Secure Cloud. This platform has been developed from the idea stage to handle this challenge. Users simply log in to the portal, click on the icon of the machine they want to connect to. Then the experience is the same as if you were sitting in place directly in the machine network.

– Security must be simple, and we are constantly trying to build IT security with an understanding of OT. The handling of the solution must be as simple as possible, otherwise the result will be that we find our own ways, which may not be so safe or according to the company’s policy. That is why we often come in and help our customers with this on site to create optimal conditions from the start, says Nils Eriksson, Product Manager.

Quality stamp with certification

Phoenix Contact is ISO-certified according to 9001. New on the market is IEC62443, a certification and quality assurance that specifies the process requirements for safe product development of industrial automation and control systems. Phoenix Contact are already today type-certified according to the standard for IEC62443.

– We ensure that our customers work with quality and future-proof products and technology, IT / OT security is extremely important and more and more units need to be connected, therefore Phoenix Contact has also hired a Nordic specialist in this area, says Nils.
