While we used to wait a long time for the latest equipment from the operator founded by Xavier Niel, this time, Free would prepare to accelerate the pace. To do this, the operator would bet on the Freebox V8, now known by the nickname of Freebox POP, in the mid-range sector. This “POP” box is gradually starting to reveal its secrets, and should not be long in pointing the end of its case. But what exactly do we know about this new Freebox?

What positioning for the Freebox POP (V8)?

With its Freebox Delta and Freebox One, the operator wanted to seize the high-end sector with boxes with impressive technical specifications. However, the still very high price of the Delta player seems to have prevented this model from becoming more democratic, despite an increase in the number of fiber-optic subscribers. Thus with the Freebox POP, the operator could well come back in force on the mid-range sector, that is to say the model which would be intended for the general public. For the moment, we do not yet know precisely what will be the exact positioning of this new Freebox in the current range of Free. It could logically take the place of the mini 4K, which would however remain in the catalog as an entry level.

What speeds will Freebox POP (V8) offer?

In the game of speeds, the Freebox POP could literally blow the competition. The next box of the band to Xavier Niel could thus support the trifle of 2.5 Gbits / s, an impressive theoretical speed for a box which targets the mid-range, and very much higher than that targeted by its competitors. For comparison, Bouygues Telecom, Orange and even SFR promise only a meager 1 Gbit / s, for example. This remains far behind the high-end offer of Free, which promises no less than 8 Gbits / s with its Freebox Delta.

What performance will Freebox POP (V8) offer?

Inside, the Freebox POP should offer a solid configuration for this type of device. The box would be powered by an AmLogic processor coupled to a Mali-G31 MP2 GPU. There are also 2 to 4 GB of RAM and 8 to 16 GB of storage. The Freebox POP will of course be 4K compatible, but would also mark the arrival of 5.1 Dolby Atmos sound.

When will Freebox POP (V8) be released?

Free gave us an appointment on July 7 for a press conference in which the operator should unveil its new generation Freebox. But if its presentation date is now known, we are not sure that the Freebox POP will be released immediately after the conference, even if, according to Freebox universe, the transporters’ trucks would already be parked outside Iliad’s headquarters in Paris, an indication of an immediate launch.

What price for the subscription with Freebox POP (V8)?

If the Freebox POP really takes the place of the mini 4K in the range, we can already expect a more or less similar price, or 34.99 euros per month (after a first year at 14.99 euros per month). That would make sense with a range that starts with the Freebox Crystal at 24.99 euros per month (9.99 euros per month for the first year), a Freebox One at 39.99 euros per month (29.99 euros per month during the first year) and which ends with Freebox Delta s and Delta.
