Mercedes today unveiled photos of the redesigned CLS model. To date, this large four-door coupe has sold over four million copies to customers worldwide, including more than 450,000 CLS first-generation units.
China was the largest market for the CLS Coupé in 2020, followed by the markets of South Korea, the United States and Germany. The reason that customers most often state for buying a CLS is its design.
During the redesign, the bumpers and to some extent the light groups were mostly changed, while in the interior we can see a completely new steering wheel that is already being installed in the newly arrived Mercedes models.
With the Driving Assistance package (optionally available), drivers are supported by Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist systems. In this case, the steering wheel uses the capacitive principle to detect the driver’s hands. There is a two-zone sensor base in the steering wheel rim.
Sensors on the front and rear of the rim register whether the driver’s hands are on the steering wheel. Now it is not necessary to move the steering wheel to inform the driving assistance systems that the driver has control. This improves ease of use while driving in semi-automated mode.
The two-tone “designo” interior with exclusive hood leather is now available in 5 new combinations:
classic red / black, “saddle” brown / black, truffle brown / black, dark white / black and “yacht” blue / red.
In addition to the well-known petrol engines, the CLS 300 d 4MATIC has a lightweight hybrid drive system. Its four-cylinder diesel engine (OM 654 M) comes with an integrated second-generation starter-generator and a 48-wave electric system. Power is 195 kW plus 15 kW of electrical amplification.
Energy recovery and the ability to “sail” with the engine off make this drive very efficient. Electrification also allows the use of an electric refrigerant compressor for the air conditioning system.
Part of the range is still the four-cylinder diesel engine without ISG in the CLS 220 d model with 194 horsepower. The Mercedes CLS 300 d 4MATIC has 265 hp, and the CLS 400 d 4MATIC 330 horsepower. The first two have a volume of 2.0 liters and the third is 3.0.
As for petrols, here we have one 2.0 in the CLS 350 with 299 hp, while the 3.0 is fitted in the CLS 450 4MATIC with 367 hp and the CLS 53 4MATIC + with 435 horsepower.
