A new device owned by Redmi sub-brand from Xiaomi arrived in our hands for testing and presentation. This is Redmi Note 9T which comes to be placed in the mid-range market with price €299 and to “hit” the “sweet spot” for many potential buyers, being a smartphone that meets the needs of the average user. Let’s go see it!
We had the device at our disposal black colour by Info-Quest Technologies, the official distributor of Xiaomi products in Greece, but you will also find the Note 9T available at purple colour.[b] Gorilla Glass 5 on the front protects the screen while the back is plastic, with textured, finish, quality to the touch and a large camera module that does not protrude much from the back. In the package you will find Type-C cable, 22.5 Watts charger and a transparent silicone case which protects and offers the required grip for one-handed use. The weight is 199 grams and a thickness of 9.1 millimeters, so the Note 9T can hardly be considered “heavy”.
The device has a screen 6.53 “with IPS panel and analysis 1080×2340 pixels (19,5:9 aspect ratio), while the bezels are small, offering her one 84% screen-to-body ratio. Covered by Gorilla Glass 5 and performs up to 450 nits of brightness. We could not measure the actual brightness in any way, of course, but in practice, in bright sunshine, it was enough to use the phone comfortably. The selfie camera is “hidden” inside the small hole notch and so few pixels are “sacrificed”, something that will satisfy many users.
In terms of hardware, the Redmi model has the mid-range MediaTek Dimensity 800U chipset, 4GB RAM and 128GB storage (UFS 2.2), which, however, is expanding via microSD. Is running Android 10 with MIUI 12 (will also accept Android 11) and has Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.1 and NFC, among other connectivity methods. At the top you will find and IR blaster while there is also FM receiver radio frequencies. In addition, it has 3,5mm jack, while the fingerprint sensor is on the side, “inside” the power-lock key. Finally, let us emphasize that it has triple tray for 2 nano-sim and 1 microSD.
Let’s go to the cameras. The rear triple camera has a main sensor 48MP with f / 1.8 lens, PDAF and combined with 2MP macro camera and a 2MP depth camera. The LED flash is what one would expect in a mid-ranger and the camera can shoot[b] 4K video at 30FPS, 1080p at 60FPS and slow-motion 720p. As for the selfie camera it has a sensor 13MP with f / 2.3 lens and 1080p video capture at 30 FPS. If we “missed” something here, it is undoubtedly the ultra-wide camera that is now in the “basic equipment” of almost every smartphone and quite useful sometimes.
The sound comes from two stereo speakers and in terms of autonomy, we have a very large battery with capacity 5.000mAh which is also the main culprit for the weight of the device. On the other hand, however, it offers tremendous autonomy and is rechargeable with power 18W (33% in 30 ‘).
The Redmi Note 9Τ is a pretty good device that will comfortably meet the needs of most users. It relies on the quality of construction, design and support of 5G networks but also its performance to justify its purchase cost and to some extent succeeds. However, having seen other Xiaomi / Redmi devices close to € 300 in recent years, we would probably expect something more to give the “golden dot” to this model.
