The Bureau of the Central Tracing Agency of the International Committee of the Red Cross on Issues Related to the Armed Conflict on the Territory of Ukraine has registered about 5,000 requests to search for people, reports RBC with reference to the head of the Russian section of the bureau, Anastasia Kushleiko.

According to her, requests for search are received in writing, by phone and through an online form. At the same time, Kushleiko added that in total more than 40,000 appeals were registered, but there are duplicate ones among them.

According to the representative of the bureau, the organization cooperates with the National Information Bureaus for Russia and Ukraine. “The parties provide us with information because our mandate and the Geneva Conventions provide for it – lists of prisoners of war, cards, notices of capture, official lists, information about exchanged people. On this basis, we compile our database. We centralize information, store it and transfer it to the other side,” she said.

Kushleiko also noted that the information received by the bureau is stored forever. In particular, the data of the bureau units that were created after the Second World War or the Iraq War are still relevant – they help to establish the fate of those who disappeared then. Until March 2022, the bureau’s Gulf War unit was the last one created in connection with a specific armed conflict.
