Record number of cases: “Very fast spread of infection”

The spread of infection increased greatly throughout the country during the first week of the year. In both Västra Götaland and Skåne, the highest number of cases was noted in a single week since the start of the pandemic.

The spread of infection in Sweden has increased significantly during the first week of the year, with a peak of 23,882 new confirmed disease cases on Wednesday 5 January. On Monday 10 January, which is the most recently reported day at the Swedish Public Health Agency, 15,128 cases of illness were reported.

This compares with the Monday before, January 3, when 9,988 confirmed cases were reported.

1,487,291 cases of covid-19 have now been confirmed in total since the start of the pandemic in Sweden.

33 percent have received the third dose

On Tuesday, 54 more deaths with covid-19 were reported. A total of 15,431 people have died with covid-19 in Sweden since the start of the pandemic.

82.3 percent of the population aged 12 and older have so far been vaccinated with two doses. 33.1 percent of all people aged 18 and older have been vaccinated with three doses.

During the first week of the year, a record number of new cases of covid-19 were noted in Västra Götaland. 27,044 new cases were confirmed – the highest record in a single week to date during the pandemic.

This is a sharp increase from the week before, when there were 7,886 confirmed cases.

High pressure on tests

“We now see a very rapid spread of infection throughout the region and in all age groups. If you have not been vaccinated, do so! Take the third dose as soon as you can,” says infection control doctor Thomas Wahlberg, at Infection Control Västra Götaland in a press release.

The pressure to test oneself has also been record high. During the first week of this year, 93,417 PCR tests were performed in the region. The previous peak, from the week before Easter 2021, was 66,000 tests. The high demand has led to longer response times and to some extent a lack of sampling kits.

“Our hope is that the situation will have improved towards the end of the week,” says Jan Kilhamn, acting director of health and medical care in the region.

On 10 January at 10 am, there were a total of 227 inpatients with positive covid-19, of which nine were in the intensive care unit (IVA) at the hospitals in the Västra Götaland region.

Weekly record also in Skåne

Skåne also noted a record number of new cases last week. During week 1, 17,268 covid patients were reported in the region, which is an increase of 55 percent compared with the previous week.

A total of around 59,000 samples were taken last week in Skåne – a new record for a single week – and a sequencing of the samples shows that the new omikron variant accounts for 75 percent of the positive cases, Region Skåne writes in a press release.

On Tuesday, 234 covid patients received care at Scanian hospitals, which is an increase of 63 patients compared to last Tuesday. 14 patients receive intensive care, which is the same number as a week ago.
