Polish poultry farmers are increasingly focusing on duck breeding, with the intention of increasing production in 2022 and reaching their record in duck breeding and meat production, the National Chamber of Poultry and Feed Producers (KIPDiP) announced.
It is expected that in 2022 the population of ducks from this country will reach 25-27 million heads, which is 40-50% more compared to 2021, estimated Katažina Gavronska, director of KIPDiP, adding that last year that figure was 18 million heads , while just a decade ago it amounted to 3.2 million head.
Poland is the second largest producer of duck meat in Europe
“This is a cosmic pace of growth,” said Gavronska, assessing that Poland is in third place for the production of duck meat in Europe, after France and Hungary.
This year’s growth is predicted to push Poland to second place on this list. “In the past, we already had months when we slaughtered more ducks than the Hungarians,” said Gavronska. “Given that the current trends in duck meat production in Poland are maintained, we predict that Poland will take over Hungary in terms of duck meat production in 2021.
France produced 177,000 tonnes of duck meat in 2021, compared with 90,000 tonnes in Hungary, 57,000 tonnes in Poland and 20,000 tonnes in Germany and Bulgaria, she reported.
KIPDiP reported that the strong growth trend in duck meat production stems from huge export demand for duck meat (primarily in Europe), an outbreak of bird flu in France (including on duck farms) and slow but systematic changes in the culinary habits of Poles who are beginning to accept duck meat as part of its food basket.
Overcoming the consequences of the pandemic
The Polish duck meat market managed to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2020, KIPDIP warned that the wave of isolation hindered the sale of duck meat both on the domestic and export markets, primarily through the HoReCa segment. A sharp drop in sales has hit farmyard duck meat prices, undermining the profitability of Polish duck farms.
However, the financial situation of the duck market improved noticeably in 2021.
