The Standing Committee on the Ministry of Shipping of the Eleventh National Assembly has recommended to start the removal of garbage and polythene from the Buriganga and Karnafuli rivers by collecting grab dredgers as a matter of urgency.

At the meeting, the committee recommended the ministry to take necessary steps to remove waterlogging through coordination with the Chittagong Development Authority and the Chittagong Port Authority.

The 28th meeting of the committee was held at the Parliament House on Thursday under the chairmanship of Major (Retd) Rafiqul Islam, Bir Uttam. Committee members Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, State Minister for Shipping, Dr Samil Uddin Ahmed Shimul and SM Shahzada attended the meeting.

According to the working paper of the meeting, the rivers surrounding Dhaka are being evicted in various ways and the government is working to free them. These rivers are littered with garbage and polythene in such a way that the water of these two rivers is absolutely black and smelly. However, the rivers are losing their navigability. Therefore, in order to increase the navigability of these two rivers and to remove pollution, the committee has emphasized on the collection of sophisticated grab dredgers to remove the garbage and polythene of the two rivers.

The meeting discussed in detail the development plan, implementation and development activities of Chittagong Port Authority and issues related to audit objections and recruitment of manpower. The committee recommended to present the details of the audit objection of Chittagong Port Authority in the next meeting and to take action for recruitment and promotion of vacant manpower. The meeting was attended by the Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping, heads of various agencies, concerned officials of the Ministry of Shipping and the Secretariat of the Parliament of Bangladesh.
