‘Rebel’ Jahangir is being punished again, arrangements will be made only when the Prime Minister returns to the country: Mirza Azam

The former mayor of Gazipur, who was given a conditional pardon, went beyond the party’s decision to become a rebel candidate. Awami League is going to take action against Jahangir Alam. Awami League’s organizing secretary (Dhaka Division) Mirza Azam said that a decision will be taken on party president Sheikh Hasina after returning home after her foreign tour.

He said this at the joint committee meeting of Awami League and allied organizations at Amtali Chudi Resort in Bariya Union of Gazipur Sadar Upazila on Thursday night.

Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque, State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell, Awami League Organizing Secretary SM Kamal Hossain and Awami League candidate Azmat Ulla Khan were present in the meeting.

Jahangir Alam decided to become the party’s rebel candidate after the Awami League nominated candidate for the Gazipur City Corporation election. Awami League is planning to take disciplinary action against him as he is an independent candidate who went against the decision of the party and submitted nomination papers.

Mirza Azam said that Awami League President Sheikh Hasina once pardoned Jahangir Alam despite breaking party discipline. Jahangir asked for forgiveness and mentioned in the application that he will not do anything against the discipline of Awami League for the rest of his life. But he didn’t stop talking. He has broken party discipline again, so Jahangir Alam must be punished for the crime of breaking party discipline.’

He said that he spoke with the central and Gazipur leaders of Awami League last Tuesday. There, the leaders of the Central Committee of Awami League have all agreed that action will be taken against Jahangir when Awami League President Sheikh Hasina returns home. He said, ‘Everyone agrees, measures will be taken when the leader comes to the country or the Prime Minister will tell what he will do when.’

Besides, the leaders who are not working for Azmat Ulla Khan, the nominated candidate of Awami League in the Gazipur city elections, are also being kept under surveillance. Mirza Azam said that the councilors who only want their own votes and not the boat’s vote, they will not get any post in the ward, police station or metropolis.

Meanwhile, there is no opportunity for Jahangir to participate in the vote even after submitting the nomination papers. The returning officer canceled his nomination as he was the guarantor of a defaulted loan of Tk 101 crore in a garment factory. It did not survive the appeal to the Election Commission. Although he has announced to go to the high court.
