Re-tune of TV channels

To continue watching TV you need to retune the channels and adapt to the new DVB-T2n standard

In order to continue watching the programs television is necessary retune the TV channels.
From January 2022 the process will affect some regions of Northern Italy and then, gradually, all the others. By the end of 2022 it will have to be completed across the country.

The reasons for the retuning of the TV and the incentives for the change of new TVs

The cause is the passage of frequencies from broadcasters to telcos, called to use them for 5G.
On the basis of a European obligation, TV operators must hand over the 700 MHz band to telephone operators (refarming). The transition to DVB-T2 is necessary as it will have to allow TV broadcasters to continue broadcasting the same amount of channels, in order to switch to the second generation (DVB-T2). Therefore, it will be necessary to have adequate televisions or decoder to this.

Precisely for this reason, the Mise has introduced incentives for changing televisions.

From 8 March 2022, in fact, the national television broadcasters will discontinue the Mpeg-2 transmission encoding and will activate the encoding throughout the country. Mpeg-4, on the technological standard DVBT.

Until December 31, 2022, however, national television broadcasters will continue to broadcast simultaneously with both encodings. Then, from January 1, 2023, the DVB-T2 will be the only standard.

With the Budget Law 2022, another 68 million euros were refinanced to incentivize the change of the television or the purchase of a decoder. In addition, appliances purchased before 22 December 2018 are considered scrapped.

In practice, the bonus is one 20% discount (up to a maximum of 100.00 euros) on the final purchase price of the new TV (including VAT). There are no income limits. In the case of scrapping of a television before 22 December 2018, this must be communicated with a specific form on the Mise website.

How to know if the appliance needs to be replaced

For the transition from Mpeg-2 to Mpeg-4, it is necessary to check if the TV allows us to see at least one of the channels currently already available in HD, such as Canale 501 for Raiuno Hd, 505 for Canale 5 Hd and 507 for LA7 Hd.

To understand if the TV will be able to work with the arrival of the technological upgrade, the test will be done on channels 100 and 200, verifying that the message “Test Hevc Main10” appears.

No problem for those who currently use Timvision or Sky Q or tivùsat Timbox decoders.
