According to CFR SA, one of the mechanics did not respect the stop signal in the area of the Toporu station, ran over a locomotive and hit the other locomotive head-on, which was coming from Giurgiu.
IPJ Giurgiu reported that the two mechanics were transported to the hospital following the accident, and one of them had a blood alcohol level of 0.64 mg/l of pure alcohol in the exhaled air.
