Rail accident involving the Google Street View car

An accident in which the Google car was involved took place on Wednesday, May 10, at a railway level crossing in Mehedinți county. The Google Street View car was hit by a train traveling on the Turnu Severin – Bucharest route.

The driver did not stop at the railway crossing, and the car was hit head-on by the personal train, informs Adevărul.ro. It stopped only after 300 meters, because the brake was suddenly activated by the engine driver and the brake pipes broke.

Following the impact, a conscious victim (the 51-year-old driver) was transported to the hospital, but the car was totaled. The driver did not stop at the crossing, and according to witnesses, after the impact, he got out of the car by himself. A local jumped to his aid and removed the terminals from the car.

The CFR mechanic later testified that he tried to avoid the impact, because he saw the car from 50 meters away, but also that the driver most likely did not notice the train. The set eventually stopped automatically, thanks to the emergency brake system. The traffic police from Mehedinți have opened a criminal case for personal injury following this accident.

Google Street View cars returned to Romania this spring

Their goal is to update the database with new information and Street View images from the more than 100 cities they will visit, as well as Google Maps roads and highways.

The accident in Mehedinți is the second road incident that happened in just one month since these cars started to cross Romania’s roads. In March, there was a collision between two cars in Constanța county. And then, as now, the driver did not give priority.

In the present case, the level crossing with the barrier-free double railway was signaled by road signs and acoustic and light signals, which the driver appears to have ignored.
